A very effective way of using the harp live is to just play a chord or TB octave in back of the band

I play a lot with young jazz/folk bands where there is no blues space and there are a lot of notes and lyric

Keep back and just add value by chording and playing the percussive line

They give very little time to solo maybe 1 bar so make it count

Just some thoughts guys...

I get called for an R&B gig with a great female vocalist every few weeks and that band leaves no room for me to solo other than on Chromatic during "At Last" where all I do is play the melody for 12 bars. Pretty much all I do is fill and comp and much of that time I do my best to sound like a B3 deep in the mix. They must like what I do since I keep getting the call. It's a fun gig in a busy bar and I get $50 and a cheeseburger and two beers for two 50 min sets.

The range of range of possible applications is one of the things I love about this magic little instrument.

I'm pretty sure this is (maybe pre-Willie) Mickey Rafael. Is it Folk? Blues? Country? I don't know what to call it, but the harmonica is just about everywhere in it.

If you, or I, are just comping/chugging in the background, opportunities are passing us by. On the flip side, you better know what you're doing. Practice, practice, practice.
