I am a fan of Jason's, too. I don't think this is a fair question. In my opinion it is very unrealistic to ask any touring pro to tab out a song for you, or even just to send you tabs if he has written them for this song. Those tabs are a work product. Professional musicians are trying to earn a living.

On this forum and others, I generally find requests asking someone to figure tabs to make it easier for the one posting to learn a song to be disturbing.

A general question to a general audience, such as, "Does anyone have tabs for this song?" is less bothersome. If a fellow enthusiast has spent the time tabbing out a song for himself and wants to share, fine.

I encourage people to use their ears, and maybe a slow down device or software, to figure out songs. You will learn a lot, whether you tab it out or just learn it by ear.

But directly soliciting tabs for a song from a specific pro on a public forum just seems wrong, even if politely asked. IMHO

I charge $50 and up to tab out a whole song/solo, etc.
It usually takes an hour or longer of focused energy.

Agree with Doug S.

Don't forget that Mooncat is the middle of rising from his ashes--I don't think tabbing out a fan's favorite is likely . . .
Besides, this could happen to you!

Speaking of which.

I have tons of things i want to figure out, but something that's been stuck in my head for months now is Ricci's Beginning to Double Trouble. Just the first few notes. I gave it a go a few times just realy quick, didn't spend alot of time on it, but i had trouble figuring out the notes aswell as the key.

Any idea?

The guy should ask for lessons. Jason has given tons of free stuff online, I think it's time to give back.

Popculture, yeah, I think we have to delete the post on our end to get rid of the whole thread.

That said, here is my take. You never know until you ask. I've helped tab a couple songs for people (not stuff as advanced as Jason's though). Most people don't take the time to tab their own stuff out, or to learn to write tab out fluently for that matter. For an instrument where a lot of people learn by ear it takes a while to write it out.

Personally, for my playing, I'd rather spend the time practicing learning how to figure out a song by ear than by tab. When people ask for tab for a specific song I'm more likely to give them the key and starting note and encourage them to work it out from there. The exception is when someone needs it quick for a specific event (weddings, birthdays, etc.)

But it never hurts to ask.

Double trouble.
Song key D, G in cross

Jason (pretty positive) plays the entire song using C harp, even the intro. At least, that's my findings on the version I listen to on YouTube

IMO, tabs are useless and much more of a crutch. Harp players need to start learning to use their ears. That will teach them not only what, but WHEN to play ;)

I agree. Tabs can be useful so that you know if you ve figured it out the right way or not. Or like in this case, i just wanted a few notes to kick it off. I couldn't figure it out. Is he playing in 3rd then? That's what your saying right? Would make sense why i couldn't get it. It's been stuck in my head for months!

Hmm. Thanks Bro. I dont play 3rd yet, but it makes sense why i couldn't figure it out right away.

Im on a mission to bone up on my theory and learn 3rd.

Unfortunately I also have A.D.D. and am BiPolar. So I start reading about theory and different scales and positions. And either A) Get Pissed off as say Eff it. Or B) Squirrel!!! What was I talking about? Oh well.

Im Really Reinvesting myself in it. Because being stuck with a few scales in 2nd is getting old. I have plenty of good learning material. I just have to do it and quit making excuses. Im also hoping learning Chromatic Harp at the same time may help with scales and Position work.

Thanks Man. Lol. I havent tried super hard to figure it out, but its been burning in the back of my head for months. And when I have tried the notes just werent there. Well they where just not in 2nd. 8^)>

@killa

You don't need theory at all. Just use your ear. Basic theory is great, but there are WAY too many theory monsters that can rattle off technicalities and can't play very well for the amount of theory they know. Some of the best musicians I know and have heard can't even spell music theory.
Just grab your harp and play along. All you need to know is that the one hole draw is the root (tonic) note for 3rd position

Dave Barrett has a great series of lessons on 3rd position over on bluesharmonica.com.

In one of the very first videos, called "An Intuitive Approach to 3rd Position", he goes over the mindset of playing 3rd. Mostly you'll just be playing along with him and getting a feel for it. Very little theory and a LOT of fun.

There's also a series of songs in 3rd that increase in difficulty. The first one is a rhumba using the middle octave. Subsequent studies introduce things like the high end octaves, the bend intensive holes 1-4, and there's even a great William Clarke style tune that's very challenging.

Carl .. yea im not trying to be a theory wiz, but i de like to know some of it. Mostly scales and how they work. Damn near everything jason plays is based on scales and triplets. I want to open up my options by knowing how to play things in different positions, octaves, etc. I know what your saying though. And your right.

Mirco ... daves site never made sense to me is to all over the place. It's broken down TOO much. There are SO many little lessons to listen to and study.

Idk maybe I'll give it another shot.

I did buy daves third positon book. I'm starting in on that now.

Killa, yeah, I'm not bipolar but I'm pretty sure I have ADD. I was actually supposed to call this place near me for testing. I kept putting it off and then eventually forgot about it. I keep all my harps on my computer desk. By having them by the computer (where I spend most of my day) the harmonicas in effect become the squirrel.

I learned most of the theory I know back in college. The classroom setting had fewer distractions. When I try watching YouTube videos I watch one on the topic I was originally going to watch and then end up off on 15 more topics that interest me before calling it a day. :)

But, at least I watched the one on topic first, so at least I get a little learning in each time.

EZ theory you can play any of the chord tones- ( root, 3, 5 ,7) over that chord

You can normally play the notes of the minor pentatonic scale over the whole progression-- you can mix and match as you care to

As someone else wrote it is better to learn notes and intervals than patterns
Why? because you can do more when you know the alphabet than if you can just recognize words
