Can anyone explain the difference between tube subs and lowering the input gain by using e.g. a tube mp preamp? Thanks!

Unless you get get a tube preamp to output a weaker signal than you put into it - you can't lower the gain with one.Tube preamps are useful for getting a tube sound from a solid state amp or PA. But they're generally NOT for this purpose.

Lower your input by changing the volume or running through an EQ pedal or something to that effect.

You can use one to send a lower signal to you amp. Harp mic signals are much much stronger than a guitar, so you hit the feedback wall faster.

Greg, that's exactly what I'm using it for (and I like the warming/compressing it does too)..

So given that's what it does, as rogonzab pointed out also, is there still a use for subs?

This discussion of course echos the squeel killer stuff..

First rule is "whatever works for you". But subbing a tube or two has got to be cheaper than a tube preamp (if we're talking about using the same quality tubes)- it is simpler and attacks the problem at its root.

Two points:

1) You don't always have the option of subbing tubes. Lots of times, players have to use someone else's amp as found.

2) it doesn't have to be a tube pre-amp. Since you aren't overdriving it, any low-noise pre-amp with a high imput impedance and an output volume control works. The Lone Wolf Harp Tone+ Works great for this.
