Am I the only person in the world who didn't realize that there's a cottage industry in covering Taylor Swift songs on harmonica? Maybe I need to make a video.
On a lark I've learned Adelle's Hello, Miley's Wrecking Ball and Europe's Final Countdown. Always good to know songs that the audience knows but doesn't expect you to play.
Or, we could all become anti-Swiftians (I guess that would also be defined as "folks who move slowly") and do a video channel that ONLY allowed one-hit-wonders.
Without question, there's much fame, fortune and annoying amusement to be had with harp covers of "In the Year 2525" or "Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)"
I'm more surprised that these haven't been hit with DMCA take-down notices. YouTube is notorious for hitting these kinds of videos with a pre-emptive copyright strike. Perhaps that top duo there filed for the necessary permits though... ----------
I don't have them down tight yet, but for reference, timeistight, here are the originals-
Adelle's Hello (closing in on a billion hits on YouTube)
Here is the director's cut of Wrecking Ball, closing in on 100,000 hits. (There is the scantily clad version of the video too, which combined with this is getting into that 1 billion view range.)
And here is the classic hair metal tune, The Final Countdown,
At first I confused the name with Taylor "Hicks" and wondered if he broke through to the main stream. The comments set me straight. She does have the heartthrob thing going for her.
My nephew appears to be a fan with tongue in cheek.
Timeistight, lol, over two billion YouTube views! 10 seconds of each would give you an idea of what you are missing. More than that and you risk contracting an earworm.
There are parodies of the risque version of Wrecking Ball with over 100 million views. (Some pretty funny ones too.)
Actually, some of my favorite covers of all time take a song out of one genre and move it into another. I'm learning them just for laughs. (Confession time, I owned the Europe album on tape as a kid), and Adelle has a great voice. I don't know her work enough to know if she ranges over into the blues at all.
That was a great find AG, I really enjoyed the ensemble playing, it's a real challenge to do that kind of stuff and Winston's piece was very cool too, thanks. My band is a blues/RnB combo but we spent each week working on an ensemble piece. Currently, we are working on "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." Initially , we worked on the George "Harmonica' Smith version but have since worked on the Tony Bennett version. Why do we do this? Well, it's a good tune and we want to build a repertoire of standards so we can get hired as a jazz band for a wedding/cocktail party. After 45 minutes of standards, we can kick into the blues/RnB thing, ha!!
