I just bought a new Hohner 1896 key of A. The first thing I noticed was the volume was way lower than my other 1896's including the one it replaced. Has anyone had this happen to them or does anyone know what could cause this?

If it's real leaky, the reed gaps might be too open. Warped comb or plates would also be leaky. Dead reads would probably also be out of tune, probably real flat. Check the tuning.

First of all, did you notice of the comb was painted black in the back and yellow everywhere else or was it without any paint at all? If it was the one with the black and yellow paint, you got much older stock because all the very new stuff plays much better OOTB.

It was not old stock as it was not painted. Never had this problem before so I sent it back to Hohner for service. Harmonica was re-gapped. Problem solved.

That's a happy ending. You might now have a custom reed adjustment similar to one of their Artist setups. And it sounds like a pretty quick turnaround. I am impressed.
