So Santa Clause was nice enough to bring me a Vox Mini 5 this year for Christmas. I must say, I really like this thing. All the effects are built in and I can fit my microphone, cable, and a handful of harps into the built in storage on the back, giving me a completely mobile rig that I don't even have to think about if I am going somewhere where jamming seems possible. I can just grab and go.

I was reading on a Guitar playing forum and a few people mentioned that you can install an external speaker jack, allowing you to hook this amp up to a bigger cab or PA system if need be?

This mod would take this amp into a whole new level of awesome for me (and maybe for some other folks too), I just don't really even know where to start..

I was curious if anyone had any experience doing this mod, how difficult it was to do and if there are any good tutorials online to show me how to do it without destroying my nice new amp?

Thanks in advance!

Hmmm, can't you just use the headphone connection as line out? And maybe a simple 1/4 to 1/8 adapter or 1/8 to xlr? No need to do any actual modding.

I don't think it is that easy unfortunately.. Granted most of the stuff I have found is talking about the Vox DA-5, but that is essentially the same amp and has headphone/aux inputs as well. Here is an article I just found talking about the mod done on a DA-5.. No instructions though..

You can't use an extension speaker jack as a line out. And each requires a different type of cable.

Is very easy, cut the wires from the amp to the speaker, solder a 1/4 female jack, at the speaker end a male jack, and you are ready to play
(always use speaker cable, not instrument cable to conect your amp to a speaker cab!)

I have mini 5, and just happened to be sitting near it when reading this thread. Using an 1/8" line and an 1/8" to 1/4" adapter I hooked it up to my Memphis Mini and played a few riffs thru the MM. It definitely works. The VOX speaker is cut out and feedback seemed to come at a pretty low threshold, however. I did a quick spin thru the models and they worked, as did the effects. The adapter cost me about $6 at Radio Shack.
