The weather finally broke here, it's a bit less hot and muggy, so lately we're headed for the street to play a storefront and also the big farmers' market the past couple of weekends. This morning we're goin g to do an all slide guitar/harp set so I'll do all the vocals as well as the harp work.
The energy on the street and outdoors is different than most club dates I've played. There are a select set of people who instantly respond to music on the street, from homeless folks to shoppers to revelers. Families come by sometimes and enjoy a few minutes of live performance. Especially great is the small kids who are not shy to show they like the music! We always hope that a small child will end up taking up the torch one day and doing live unfettered music.

Jolene will take out the old Regal parlor guitar, open tuned. I will be doing more in 3rd position to get more of the minor notes in the mix. We'll do some Wolf, Waters, and others along with some originals, probably play an hour and a half or so.

It's been said before, playing out in the open will train you how to make use of your air column and wind control, and it will also teach you to play with resonance but not kill reeds as well. Vocally you learn to sing at the best level to be heard yet preserve your vocal cords!
My thing is, find a good spot near the foot traffic and play at reasonable levels. Total acoustic. Those who want to hear will come closer. People have seen us on the street and drove around the block, parked, and come by to check us out. Others have crossed the street, either to avoid us or to come say hello!

It's about 75 out so far and a bit cloudy. We'll catch the early crowd at the farmers market, say from about 8 to 9:30. Then we still have the whole day to do what we want, and we'll be charged up as well! Because you take home the same energy as what you expend doing busking.

So for a change the weatherman was right. Rain on and off so far today. Bleah! Oh well, maybe we'll go fishing instead....

Well we took a nap, it cleared off, and we went ahead to the market. Exceptional session! Life is good.

Definitely a chance to work on things, try some new stuff. And folks were very appreciative today.
The produce guy we played next to gave me a box of peaches for free. Turns out we have friends in common in Helena. I expect we'll see him at King Biscuit this year!

1847 we have a fishin' song we're working on currently. A rollicking good time sort of song!
