A while back I wrote a "Harmonica World" article about navigating the third hole. I've now put it online, you can see it here

Brilliant. The part about the timbre of the 3''. I wish I'd read this when I was learning to bend. I couldn't work out why, even when could play it in pitch, it sounded odd, when all the other bent notes sounded satisfying (even when played wildly off pitch like the 2'' on the floor). Everyone said that 3 hole bends are tricky, yes yes yes, but not so much about the weird timbre of that 3''.

Since then I listened to a number of top players, listening out for the 3'', and the timbre is what it is. No point pretending.

After seeing David Barrett roundly endorse it at SPAH, I just purchased Harp Ninja. It is superb for ensuring that all your bends are spot-on. I highly recommend it!

The bendometer at harpsoft.com provides a similar function.
