Last night on the spur of the moment I painted my JT30 with black spray paint, and it turned out it be a big mistake. It looks pretty cool, I'd say, but after playing it for awhile the smell of the spray paint gets quite oppressive. For all I know, spray paint keeps giving off toxic fumes after it dries.

So now I have to take all that paint off. That's my cautionary tale.

It would stop smelling once fully cured. However - No canned spray paint works well for mics. It isn't hard enough when it is cured to stand up to handling abuse. If you use it - it will chip and flake over a relatively short period of time. You really need a catalyzed or baked paint to be sufficiently hard.

Don't ask me how I know.....

Greg's right. I paint an astatic 200 shell and it just keeps getting chips from handling. Any rings make the problem worse. Once the paint cures completely the smell will go away.

Like so many things, it all depends...

I painted an Astatic 200 shell with an epoxy enamel about five years ago and use it at least weekly. The finish is fine (even with a ring on my finger)
maybe it also depends on how roughly you handle the mic.

Yeah, djdcripey - EPOXY. Epoxy is a catalyzed substance. Like I said.....

(whenever you have to mix a Part A and a Part B to get the material to cure, you're using a catalyzed material.)

I actually used a standard Rustoleum spray paint to paint my JT30 shell fluorescent orange and it's held up extremely well. Gig at least 2 times a week with it an no problems. No smell, no flaking, no chips, etc..

However, I did blast the shell, clean it thoroughly, used primer, bake the paint, sand in between coats, repeat 3 times, followed by clear coat that I would bake, sand, and repeat 3 times.

You can see my mic from the far side of the bar haha
