Is it part of the blues harp vernacular to hit the 2 draw half-step bend in 1st position? (this would be the flat 5th)
I don't really hear it played often in 1st pos so I think not? I almost always hear the whole-step bend but the other day I think I caught Big Walter playing the 1/2 step bend in 1st and I thought it sounded pretty cool!

The two hole draw is fantastic in 1st position blues. Draw two, draw two 1/2 step bend, and draw two full step bend are all in the first position blues scale. Wailing all over the three pitches sounds great on slow blues. ---------- www.facebook.com/catfishfryeband
Second harp dude and yes it IS the b5 and a GREAT note Sonny Boy REALLY played off it on "Right to trust my Baby"! Also your right Big Walter and Little Walter really hit a lot especially on the back ground (support) sections behind Otis Rush. Great question ! Also remember on the V chore for how ever many many measures the song sits there you can essentially just play 2nd position and while were at it you can blow 12th on the IV! Have fun Slaphappy great explorations are obviously in your future with an analytical mind like that my friend! ---------- www.mooncat.org
That's cooL,12th position for the 4 chord in first position!I would think overblows would be a big part of first position blues playing.blue third, flat five and flat seven at holes 4,5,6 overblows. I look to a lot of the GUYS from the the 20s and 30s like Freeman Stowers,Kyle Wooten and Blues Birdhead all have great first position solo pieces.I love talking and thinking about this stuff!
