Here's a very harmonica heavy track from my latest duo record with genius guitarist Andre LaFosse. A lot of heart and soul went into this record and I'd love to hear what ya'll think! I'd be honored if you'd check out the rest of the record as well. There's harmonica sprinkled throughout, though this the most harp-centric track.
I'm not familiar with Slo Leak...post a track or two you'd recommend listening to!
Indeed, the solo towards the end is on diatonic, but the rest of the tune is chromatic.
Regarding my writing process, it can be quite variable!!! I end up working with a lot of different musicians in a lot of different contexts and the process changes on a case by case basis. I'd recommend you consider listening to the whole record (see below) to get an idea of how the results can change even on one record (albeit an experimental record).
On this particular track, I started with a few minutes of a recorded guitar improvisation (by Andre LaFosse) that I edited into a song structure/form...built a few things on top of it (melodic lines, parts, etc) and wrote some lyrics on a subject that is important to me. The whole process was relatively fluid with later developments necessitating revisions to previous work...eventually snowballing into the final thing!
I haven't messed with Hookpad, though I'd invite any recommendations MBH-ers might have for writing outside of one's usual "box"...it'd be great to hear/see what others have found useful and interesting!
I quite liked that! Has a cool '90's vibe to it. Seems on trend with a lot of the 90's revival sounds I'm hearing out of Oz and the UK.
I hadn't heard of Slo Leak either, so I just hit them up on the google machine. Listened to the album "When the clock strikes 12". A lot of that album sounds like the 90's swing revival stuff, but a couple of the tracks defintely have a similar vibe to what you've gtot going on here.
All in all, this is a sound that I like a lot better than most of the "typical blues stuff" that you hear a lot of around here. I encourage you to keep doing this!! I'd hope that it finds a much wider audience... ----------
Admittedly, this isn't the type of music I typically listen to, but I did enjoy it quite a bit. I fully support harmonica (chromatic and diatonic) being used in new and different music genres.
There's multiple ways to kick start the songwriting (rhythm first, melody first, words first etc) but it's the process of crafting it into a finished tune (or knowing when to call it finished and move on) that I always find interesting.
Hook theory has an interesting spin off that visualizes a songs components to give some more insight into the structure in a dynamic way. Hooktheory theorytab
I'm into the vibe of that track -- it's at the perfect tempo for the melody. nice playing on your part. I like your phrasing.
On another note, how on earth are you managing to embed the bandcamp player on here? I've been posting bandcamp links on here for years, and haven't been able to figure it out.
Cheers
