What are you practicing today?
For the week of 5/16 until 5/22

What is one thing you are committing at least 10 minutes of focused practice on today to develop into the musician you want to be?

Why do you believe focusing on that area of practice is important or why is it a unique thing for you to practice?

What or who inspired you to put it in your practice schedule?

What do you hope to gain through practicing it?

Please only list one thing you are practicing for a focused 10 minutes. Let us know why you put it on your schedule. If it's a certain part of a song, try to post a clip if you can find it. Please don't add to the thread after 5/22, I will hopefully put up a new thread for that week.

Hopefully we will end up with an interesting list of things to practice and stir up some conversation on why to practice them.

Today I will spend at least 10 minutes working on timing with Louis Bellson's book Modern Reading Text in 4/4. I hope to not only become better at reading lengths of notes but to also play them accurately & more quickly with a metronome. I hope to develop more, faster, and unique ways to fill a 4 bar measure so that similar sounding notes will hopefully sound new and fresh. This is one of many things suggested for practice by Michael Rubin.

I'm getting in an extra 10 minutes of procrastination.

After that, I'm working on playing the solo in My Babe on rack. It is no easy feat I can tell you...

I'm working on Freedom Jazz Dance. This a long term project to get it up to speed. I'm work with it on the chromatic. Tons of corner switching.

harmonicanick....

Try playing 10 minutes on an Eb GM harp scales as slow as you can.

You'd be surprised by what you discover.

What A Friend We Have In Jesus ....

For the past month I have had zero solitary wood shed time. All my practice has been with accompaniment. In addition, we are playing genres (country and gospel) in which I have had only peripheral listening experience and even less playing experience.

We have been videoing, on and off, for the entire time but I did not view the material until yesterday. Very enlightening.

Things I'm learning or re-learning:

- I have no need to break out every tool I own for every song when a straight screwdriver will suffice

- My dramatic pauses on the last note of a phrase can throw off the timing when we are playing off each other

- Learning from an original version of a song (without flourish) is my best jump-off if I ever expect to own it

- The hunt & peck (hit & miss) aspect of my learning process is best not shared no matter how sly I think I'm being

- I shouldn't play with others if I'm not listening

- I'm not nearly as versatile as I thought

- I'm getting better

These are just a few things off the top of my head. I'm tempted to post a before and after video. I think there would be a more complete educational value on this forum if we presented some of our own clunkers along with a self critique. Time will tell if I can overcome my own ego.

I love the idea of this post; however, I think it might be better to list what we are going to work on for the upcoming month. A week is barely enough time to break the ice on most concepts related to music.

As for me: I plan to spend the next couple months working on 3rd position. I am currently working through David Barrett's exploring 3rd position book. I have yet to sit down and really try to learn 3rd position, but as I began to do so I soon realize what I have been missing and why it is so popular.

@Harp Study, I appreciate the feedback. This is not an original thread idea, I took it from other communities and thought it could be helpful to see it applied here. I think it could be an interesting 'I want to practice something different today' idea generator. Or maybe just more excited to practice so you can come in and share something you did.

@Diggsblues that sounds like a really cool project hope to hear it sometime!

I think I'm going to play through the blues scale in the first 6 keys on circle of fifths octaves across my chromatic as part of my practice today. I wonder how long it would take to memorize all keys if I chose one key a day. I think it would be cool to go into any jam or band situation with only a chromatic and feel comfortable regardless the key the band is in.

@Harp Study, it's funny you mention that book. I have a set of them that I put aside in a box and never look at but yesterday I also pulled out exploring 3rd position and played some of the exercises. What's pretty fun is if you have a program like Band in the Box, you can create a looping track and play those exercises along with it. After being able to do the exercise without the book along with the track it's fun to just do something different one measure as you play it back.

I alternate between 2-3 things to max muscle memory. Lately it's specific JR speed phrases tied into standard scales/riffs, Crossroads and Mojo (Adam's from Clapton and Ludela).
It is all coming along VERY nicely.

ted that is my favorite version as well
you have chosen a very challenging piece
i got as far as the opening riff. it is a good idea to take a song
and learn the phrasing note for note, as precise as is possible
i personally dont think i have the breath control to tackle that song properly
i think he is using only the notes to the blues scale
that would be a good place to start. god luck on this endeavor.

Octaves. 1-4 draw and 2-5 3-6 blow primarily, based on Adam's latest YouTube lesson. I use octaves but not as consciously as I should. I hope this will help me inculcate them in my daily playing and get that fat sound.

I agree with Harp Study. Most of my practice is project oriented and is more on the month, or more, time frame. My current practice project has been to buckle down and finally learn a SBW2 song, "Eyesight to the Blind", note for note from the (Chess) recording. That involved finding a slow-downer app for my phone. It's coming along well. I've got the words and tune down, and since I'm playing it solo, I've had to add some appropriate fills. I record myself at various stages of learning. It will be a while before I'd dare to air it in public though.

Sympathy for the Devil guitar solo -kicks ass in 3rd. The piano parts from the beginning are cool too.
