Gary could overblow, he showed me and played some fiddle tunes, but said he would never use them in performance.

Go to Spotify, look up the CD Gary, Indiana. The song is Sadie and the overblow is around 3:10.

I know this is not some huge deal, but I find it interesting.

What was his reason for not using OB in his performances?

He covers overblows in his "Blues Harmonica-The Basics and Beyond" series.

Can't speak for Gary but except for an occasional 6OB onstage I don't either. I do a lot of work with them at home and using them has opened me to playing in new positions and different genre's of music.- I can't count on them at the instinctive level yet however, so don't try when I'm performing.

Don't have it and its a bit pricey now I see. But would still like to know why he did not use OB performing.

Gary was a traditionalist, as are RJ, Mitch, Gary Smith, Wilson, Piazza etc. Not sure whether any of these guys CAN overblow (although I know RJ can't) but they don't. I guess it depends what you have in you ear and what your role models are. If you are immersed in the world of the Walters, Smith, right up to Bill Clarke, overblows are irrelevant and even sound "wrong".

OK, ta, I was thinking along the traditionalist lines as a reason but I thought it might have been something else as Gary Primich always struck me as deep sort of cat and just wondered.

Weird, I was listening to Company Man CD last night!!!

Pretty sure it was traditionalism.

That's an overblow alright. I would argue it was accidental though.

Great find, Michael!

Ryan: I know what you mean about it possibly sounding unintentional; however, listen to the rest of the solo. He plays a similar lick with the 7-blow instead of the 6OB a few times later on, then at the 4:37 mark, he plays the 6OB again, and it sounds intentional to me.

So to my ears, Gary was using the 6OB intentionally in this one.

Also, I was listening earlier today to "The Girl That Radiates That Charm" from the same album, and I thought I heard a 6OB in there as well, but I didn't note the minutes:seconds...I would have to go back and check that one out.

Imo it was an accidental 6 OB at 3:10. He is wailing on 6 draw bend, and wanting to transition to 6 blow, 5 draw, 4draw, etc. 6 OB are easiest to achieve after a draw bend because the embouchure, tongue placement, etc is already in the correct position for OB.
I am not saying that Gary didn't gave the ability to OB, but that in this case it seems entirely accidental, especially for a traditionalist blues harmonica player.

I'll be damned. Another overblow at 1:36. This one sounds a little more intentional and in third position no less.

That one in "The Girl that Radiates" sounds completely intentional to me.

That's the way to start to sneak and introduce OB notes to the lexicon of traditional blues harmonica...

Not playing them to show off you can do it, but once in a great while sliding one in to support the song.
