Hi, Guys and Gals

I can't attend the show but I am a proud sponsor, and Winslow and Jason have been kind enough to offer to sell some stuff I shipped ahead to the show. There are Ultimate 57's and 58's, volume controls and accessories - all 10% off for show attendees.

Jason is the #1 Ultimate 57 player in the world. Winslow knows a thing or two about playing chromatic amplified - for which the Ultimate 58 is an excellent mic.

Enjoy the show - wish I could be there!

Greg, or anyone, could you give us a tonal evaluation of the Ultimate 57 vs Ultimate 58. Thanks...Goose

I can only comment on the Ultimate 545 which is close in response to the 57 .. the 58 is a 'cleaner' more towards a vocal mic as I understand it ..
Played with and w/o the bullitizer … mostly perform through a pa .. when the pa is set up .. gain high , slider as low as I can to still get a good volume … low's raised to about 3 o'clock , mid's at 11 or 12 and high's turned down to about 7 or 8 o'clock .. + minimal effects … it get's pretty good tone .. imo
Playing through an amp.. the mic really does a good job and can get a bit of crunch out of it ..
It's comfortable in my hands .. I'm not concerned with the issues of crystal mic's ..

We're really glad to have Greg's support for the second year in a row at the Harmonica Collective.

I have a stock pistol-grip 545 with a Bulletizer. I find that I can drive distortion on the 545 with my grip and playing intensity, allowing me to shade the sound instead of just having the "on/off buzz saw" sound that you sometimes get from bullet mics. I've toyed with having it chopped down by Greg to make it less bulky and weighty in my hands.

I used the bulletized 545 for most of the audio tracks for Blues Harmonica For Dummies, although I mixed in acoustic capture from a nearby Neumann TLM193.

You can hear "All I Want" from that set on this page. Also check out "Tom Tom" from the second edition of Harmonica For Dummies, which uses the Bulletized 545 straight up.

Here's me using the 545 for a clean amplified sound playing chromatic over a jazz backing track:

Jason plays the 57 without the bulletizer; he claims to have been the originator of the chopped-down 57 idea. He uses a lot of effects and this mic gives him what he needs.

I've played through the Ultimate 58 at a jam where I wanted to play acoustic, and liked it. For now my Fireball is fine, but if I decide to get rid of it, the Ultimate 58 would be my first choice. I like the 58 for clean amplified playing, and the Ultimate 58 gives you less weight in the hands. It's gained traction with jazz chromatic players such as Toots Thielemans (a longtime 58 user) and Hermine Deurloo.

The biggest difference between the 57 and the 58 is in fact the ball vs. stick shape. The ball shape of the 58 creates a wider pickup pattern, making it a better vocal mic and chromatic mic (because I close my eyes when I sing and can drift off center-mic and because chromatics are wider!) The 58 is USUALLY used into the PA, when a player wants to use it for vocals AND cleaner harp work.

Some people like it for cleaning up an overly dirty small amp as well. Unlike the Fireball, it DOES respond to cupping with significant variance in tone, however the ball shape is much more difficult to fully cup so it won't go as far into the overdriven range as a 57 (or 545.)

The Ultimate 57 is the most versatile harp mic on the planet. It has a warm clean tone in free air and CAN be used for vocals or chrome (just manage mic position), sounds great plugged into the PA, or pedals, or an amp, or an amp and pedals. When cupped fully it overdrives very nicely with highs diminished and nice distortion and bass response. Among blues players it is much more popular. Among jazz and country players the Ultimate 58 is more popular.

Hope that helps.
