I know we've started a gig calendar, and I know people post things on Facebook, but Facebook does such a lousy job by filtering things it shouldn't- how do you guys find out about shows?

(By the way, Jason is playing in Syracuse tonight, Rochester tomorrow)

If I spent my days going to every person I wanted to sees sites it would take forever. Local event calendars tell me who is in Albany, but don't tell me who is in Syracuse. (If Jason was playing the local Dinosaur Jrs. I'd just pop in the car, but learning about gigs across the state at the last minute isn't useful- road trip shows require enough time to gather friends up so you at least have someone else in the car for the drive home!)

I once missed an Annie Raines show that was going on literally right across the street from where I was playing at an open mic. A couple weeks later she was in a thread I was commenting on on Facebook and I said I'd missed her show. She asked, oh you are near Saratoga? I looked at her tour schedule and it turns out I'd just missed another one!

I don't get out all that much, but I'm working on it, but there has to be a better way to find out about them in time. How do you guys find out what is going on?

Most clubs/bars etc. have mailing lists. Subscribe to ones in your neighbourhood/driving radius?

Bro, use "bandsintown". Set up your preferences for bands and artists you like, and it will track their tours, and ping you (cell phone pop up, email, text, whatever) when they announce a show in your neck if the woods. It'll remind you as the show gets nearer too. Plus, it will also recommend related acts that you may also like. I highly recommend it. Haven't missed out on a show since I started using it!

Do not discount the value of networking among musicians and usage of tools like Facebook. If a person the caliber of Annie Raines was in town and playing across the street from an open mic that you frequent, you probably aren't talking to people that are knowledgeable about your local music scene. People book those shows locally. It's in your best interest to know who those people are and talk to them periodically or you'll continue to miss good stuff.

Most decent size cities have a blues society with a website and most send out monthly newsletters.
Something worth checking into.

Yeah, I'd second bandsintown – http://www.bandsintown.com/home

They've got iOS and Android app. Seen some great bands that i've never heard of and also keep up with ones I want to see too.

I'll look to see about the local blues society, although that will only help with blues shows. The problem with giving venues your email is they don't filter very well, and pretty soon you're not looking at their emails anymore and you are right back where you started, and when you sign up with them on FB they get filtered out unless they pay to push. I looked up bandsintown and signed up. Looks great.

Hopeful. :)

The bandsintown site will be almost worthless, if you are interested in Blues shows. Take a look at Mark Hummel. He has one gig in Texas listed on bandsintown.com. If you check out Hummel's website, you'll see a multitude of gigs between now and the end of the year. Knowing Hummel, he is probably on the phone right now booking more shows, too.

Blues societies can be good, but even those are spotty. None of the three blues societies in my area publish a calendar of shows. The best way to find stuff is to go to the websites of the venues or artists or talk to Jack. Talking to musicians will also help. Most blues artists fly under the radar. You'll struggle to find stuff unless you are plugged into the intelligentsia that serves your area.

Check on Facebook to see if there is a group that serves your area. If not, start one. Invite your friends. I can go to the Bay Area Blues group on Feacbook and find a zillion things to do. It started out slowly and gained momentum.
