Quite likely I have missed examples of him backing someone up, but I am not aware of him doing this. In particular, I was wondering if, like so many other top harp players - Big and Little Walter, Portnoy, Cotton, Paul Oscher - he did anything with Muddy Waters.

Here he is backing Muddy. At about 29 minutes in. If you keep watching, after Muddy he backs Victoria Spivey and then Mae Mercer. Of course the whole thing from the beginning is worth a couple views. Only first song is without video.

This is interesting and good 2 albums by Josh White In the beginning (1963) never released on CD, I have the LPs. Don't think he did anything with Muddy except on the live American Folk Blues live recordings. But he did a good lot with Trumpet Records sideman.

not surprised sonny boy had this opinion....have been to London several times......greatest city on earth....sonny boy apparently did not have to put up with racial prejudice like he did in the USA....

He backed Baby Boy Warren while living in Detroit for a little bit around 1954. See http://www.bluesharp.ca/legends/sboy2.html

Thanks guys for posting those songs - really cool. The harp on "Chicken" is particularly interesting - to me, it is reminiscent of Sonny Boy I's playing.

Seeing the Josh White reminded me of a story Frank Povah told me about Josh's trip to Australia in early 60s, on which Frank and his musical partner played support in Sydney. After the gig Josh invited them back to his hotel. Josh was reportedly very amused to see the (probably slightly scruffy) white men requested to use the service entrance while Josh was ushered through the main entrance and treated as the honoured guest he was.

Williamson played on Elmore James first recording of Dust My Broom.

Edit: deleted wrong version.

I can't hear the harmonica in that mix. I can hear some brass, but it doesn't sound like harmonica to me

That's what I get for trusting YouTube.

He's on this version from 1951:

timeistight -- your bottom photo. My eyes are not great. Who are those 4 people and is SBII one of them and of so, which one? Second from left maybe? I like the photo, just can't see who is there. Thanks.

Slim
