A couple of weeks back, I bought a new Hohner Marine Band 1896 in the key of G. I noticed it did not have the usual A440 on the left side of the top cover. This is the first MB that I've ever bought without that on the cover. I'm not a harp tech but I've always assumed that it has something to do with the tuning. Has Hohner changed the tuning for the 1896 model Marine Band? This question has probably been asked before on this forum but if it has I missed it. The harp sounds fine but I'm curious. Thanks

I haven't heard anything. It's probably just a cover update- they seem to be updating their look. A440, by the way, refers to the frequency of the A note. 440 is the default frequency for A (not sure which A, but one of the As. The other A's are either half or double that, so 220 and 110 are A's and 880 and 1760 would be A's as well (only higher).

Of course, playing notes you can bend hard leads to the actual pitch played sometimes being a little lower than what it is rated for, so different harp companies use a slightly different variation to adjust for that. Some harps are A 440. Others are A 446.

Then you get in to temperament, but that's crazy stuff where theorists argue over how far apart notes are. It's like guitar players moving their finger around inside the fret, only on a harmonica, once you've 'moved the finger' you have to adjust all the other reeds to to make it sound right.

Nate, I am not a guitar player, but does moving your finger within a fret change the tuning? I know it does on a fretless base, but guitar???
