I see that when you buy seydel plates it says they may need some fine tuning. Is it more fine tuning than an out of the box harp? The price has become closer between the session steel plates and the 1847 plates, is there any difference other than the size of the plates?
Thanks, Paul

The reed plates are flat packaged. This means that the reed gaps are a little tighter because there is or could be slight pressure on the reed plates.

I haven't found the tuning to be any different than the mounted plates.

Regarding the 1847 verses the SS, the 1847 plates are grooved in the front for a sandwich style fit and the SS plates are recessed. For quite awhile, the SS plates were priced artificially low to allow players to try Seydel harps as economically as possible.

The Session plates won't fit onto an 1847 comb.

The reed plates sold separately were never installed onto a comb (as far as I know). To adjust the gaps correctly, you need to adjust both reeds in the channel since the change in gap of one reed affects the response of the other. Since the reed plates were never on a comb, the gaps are approximate, hence the expectation that you will have to adjust them yourself.

This is the same expectation for every other manufacturer's replacement reed plates.

Do you really believe manufacturers have time to test bending, and adjust for response on assembled harps?

No, but I expect the gaps on an assembled harp have gotten more attention than the gaps on a set of reed plates.
