Hi guys,
I have taught a couple of guys the harp up to intermediate level or until they can find their own way forward.
I would like to know what sequence in your opinion would be the most logical way to teach and develop a beginner?
Is it for example chords, single notes, rhythm patterns(chugging) bends, simple tunes, scales, 12 bar progression, etc. While all the time listening to blues music for inspiration. Also do you teach everything to say a slow blues track for reference and something to build a foundation on.

Thanks

Russ

I always start my students by showing them how to breathe and where from. Then playing chords and a simple train shuffle and using the tongue to slap stop the breath. Keeps people interested.
These things follow after they have been shown how to hold the harp and explaining the layout of the harmonica.
There are so many valid ways you could begin, but these are mine.

I used to teach a beginners blues harmonica evening class at an adult education centre. Two courses over two terms.

I started with how to hold it correctly and the different hand positions, resonance and how to breather correctly – All fundamentals that learners should consider whenever they pick up a harp. Then I did single notes, chords, etc.

Let me you like and I'll send you my schemes of work.
