A while ago a fellow came up to me at an open mike I played. He told me that his late father had given him a couple of old harmonicas and that he wanted me to have them. I put them in a drawer a year or so. Does anyone have any info on these ? One is a "Star Band" the other a "koh-i-noor". I believe the Star Band to be fairly common....but The Koh-I Noor I'm not sure of.....I have found a few online but none of them were this old. It say's Made in Germany.

I tried to embed it for you, but I can only get the page link, not the image link. I can click through and look at them though. Not familiar with them, but I'll do some Google Fu and see what I turn up.

Who me? Procrastinating and not working on things I should be? Never!

Apparently there is a Koh-I-Noor at the National Music Museum. All the entry says is this:

"Koh-i-Noor" jeweled harmonica by F. A. Böhm, Klingenthal, ca. 1925. NMM 8978

There is a picture of a tremolo model with a fancy paintjob on flikr.

And a less authoritative ebay link which I seem to have misplaced that listed it as made in India. (Maybe production moved there at some point, or it was for that market?) Koh-i-Noor is also the name of a famous diamond mined in what is now part of India. It means 'Mountain of Light' It made it's way into the crown jewels. Like much of the cultural artifacts of the British Empire there is some dispute over ownership and India wants it back.

Aside from being Polish (or at least some of them being Polish) I can't find much on the Star Bands.

I remember seeing a booth at Harp-fest in San Diego with hundreds of antique harps from a collection. The person that had the collection had compiled catalogs with information about many obscure old harps. Unfortunately I can not remember his name. Perhaps someone else here does.

pharpo - there is a Harmonica Collector's Group on Facebook. IF you post pictures there it is a dafe bet that you will get some good info. Plus it is easier to post pictures on FB.
