I've been doing a lot of work with a great country band lately. There's a ton of blues-harp gear talk 'round here, but what about country music? What are you country guys using?

For me, I'm either going with my SM-58 on a mic stand directly into a PA (this is generally in nicer venues with good monitors and a guy working the board), or the same 58 (armed with a BlowsMeAway volume control) plugged into my Marble Max amp, with a line-out run from the amp to the PA if there is one. Using a small tube amp might seem a little counter-intuitive for country music but I first used the Max at a party gig where there was no PA, so it was a necessity. The guys in the band loved the grittier tone. And it's not without precedent; Mickey Raphael has been holding a Beyerdynamic M88 mic and splitting his signal -- into a small tube amp, and an ART Tube MP pre-amp -- for years.

Anyway, if you gig regularly with a country band, what's your preferred "rig?"

$12 vocal mic and a $5 XLR cable.
$9 mic stand.
Most gigs have open bar so I stopped hauling a cooler.

I figure a clean sound is good enough for Willie it is good enough for any 2-bit group I'm in.

I agree with GMaj7, I play through a 58 and PA for acoustic country harp. Play about 20-25cm from the mic (on axis) during sound check, then you have room to move closer, when you need to boost the volume a bit.

Great to hear a little something for Country Music.... and I'm not talking about "Oh Susana" either!

I'm not in a band or anything, just play with my family and alone (we have a pretend band). I like, and play along with, a lot of country (especially Honky-Tonk). I think the Blues harp I've learned goes really well with most of it.

I've used a SM58 straight through the PA mostly, but just got a Superlux D112/C mic. Not too expensive and also, for some fun, a delay effects pedal.

I have a question.... do you guys try to play similar to the steel and fiddle if there is no harp?

Unless it is a REALLY bluesy country when I might use a tube amp with a clean dynamic mic I use the PA. I use one of a number of mics in descending order of preferance: Ultimate 58, Shure 585, Audix Fireball V, Shure 57, Shure 55SH II, or even an EV630. I will sometimes use a stand, sometimes hand held depending on the mic and my mood. Effects would vary depending upon the room and the song, and whether I am also singing, from none, to reverb, to slight slapback delay.
