I am practicing some Bob Marley for a Bob Marley tribute night as his birthday is fast approaching on February the 6th. I haven't found many Bob Marley harmonica versions either instrumental or in a band that tweek my interest. I'm always playing the blues, so the bluesier the better for me. Anyone know any good video or care to take a stab at playing something to post here? I am thinking of doing Iron Lion Zion but will play just about anything if I can pull it off!

bob's vocal melodies translate really well to harp, maybe get some riff ideas from them?

Exodus is easy, fun and sounds great. Play in 3:rd on G harp. Groove the 456 draw chord (Am) and 456 blow (G) and throw in melody and riffs between chords. You can play pretty much everything in the song on harp.

"No woman no cry" is probably already taken if it´s a tribute night, but otherwise it sits well in 1st and/or 12th pos.

I,ve sat in a few times with Jah Works from Baltimore. They do a great version of Could You Be Loved; its a great funky tune with alot of space for harp, and a crowd pleaser at that.

What ever song or songs you do just first do something percussive on draw 2 that goes along with the drums/base line. Then expand on that when you solo.
That always works for Reggae/Dead stuff.

Talking Blues, Lion Zion could be a fun one. Rastamon Vibration. Wake up and Live, horn lines!! Redemption Song. I guess any song could work. How about Jammin!?

Try not to over-complicate the tone, either. A more clean, compressed, edge-of-breakup tone with some delay would do wonders, eespecially if you're playing with people who actually know how to play roots reggae. Listen/watch Bob and the Wailers Live! DVD, I think from London in 1977. Listen to Junior Murvin's Strat. Punchy, a little grit, but with room to open up more when he chose. Reggae, especially rootical music, is not about chops and showing off, but about the groove and the ensemble. have fun!

I used to play in a band that did a set of Bob Marley tunes. A quick tip is that Major tunes try second position Major Pentatonic scales the minor stuff you can go second position blues. I used chromatic on No Woman No Cry.
