Man, not only does this guy play killer harp in multiple styles - I mean all the technique, all the chops, all the musical sophistication, and as genuinely soulful as it gets, but did you listen to his singing?! On the one cut that Todd graces us with his voice - Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven - he absolutely NAILS it! You want blues? You want soul? You want great? Well, here you've got it.
Mark my words: we get to say we knew him when.
Bravo! Encore!

"TONE!"

That was the first word out of my mother's mouth when I played a bit of this album for her. She is a Professional flutist and a generally phenomenal musician with little to no experience with/interest in the harmonica and she was totally floored. ...It probably helps that she's heard me play! ;)

+1 harper. This CD in incredible. It's tragic to think that he still has a few of the 100 free downloads left.

Thanks for this contribution Todd!

I've only had one listen so far but this is a remarkable album.

Fantastic production values and just outstanding harmonica playing on every track (I can't wait for the CD version to arrive in the mail so I can hear the uncompressed audio).

I like that it's all acoustic harp (I think) and would love to know about the signal chain that was used to capture that sweet tone in all it's glory. (Mic, preamps, botique processors etc)

Congrats Todd, thanks for putting this out into the world, you rock!!

Again, thank you all so much for the kind compliments.

The harmonica was recorded through a Neumann TLM-103, and an Avalon VT737-SP Preamp for most tracks. At least one track "Sunday Soup" was recorded through a Neve preamp and am Empirical Labs Distressor. I think some tracks were recorded through a PreSonus ADL-600. The Distressor may have been used in post-production on the other harp tracks (I would have to asked the guys who mixed it).

"Selah" was really just a filler tune, but I wanted to include it because it was recorded through a Shure SM58 mic back in 2004, and was played on a $6 Hot Metal Harmonica! I replaced some of the keyboard tracks as well as the drums.

"Since I Laid My Burdens Down" was my only meager attempt at amplified playing, and was played through a stock Fender Blues Junior amp, on a Hohner Blues Blaster. We did a lot of work to it afterwards with a SansAmp plugin, and other compression and EQ plugins, to shape the tone as best as we could.

All of the harp tracks had EQ and compression plugins as well, mainly to adjust the higher frequencies of the harp, taking the shrillness out so it wouldn't hurt the listeners' ears.

Hope this helps!

So Sweet Todd! It's a classic album already :-)

Great to hear that Charlie McCoy-inspired style matched with modern lyrical overblow playing. A great combination.

Gorgeous cover art! Thanks for the info on your recording tactics. I was trying to wrap my head around how your high end playing came out so nicely on the tracks (besides obviously being talented and experienced). Go Todd, go!

OK. We all agree that Todd is an enormous talent with an enormous and unique gift. Woooweeeee! Knock me down!

I also wanted to pay homage to the other musicians on this CD, who are clearly well up to the task of showing this guy off. I especially am wowed by your guitar player, Todd. Yes I am.
I'm assuming, cuz I think I read somewhere once upon a time, that you were trading digital tracks with folks to put this thing together, that you may not have been in the studio with a live band. In any case, kudos to the great players you put yourself together with. Mmmm!
Yes indeed.

Yes, harp-er, part of the reason this project took me forever, was because I played a lot of the other instruments myself, mainly keyboards and bass, and I had to send tracks out for overdubs. Whoa! Thanks for all the info, Todd. I'm sure most or all of that will be available with the CD too. I'll have to take another listen to the MP3 to decide which tracks in particular I enjoyed the guitar on. There were more than one, I know that. I'll get back to you when I know specifically.

OK Todd, I just listened again to your wonderful album, and now I can be more specific about which guitar masters I'm talking about: for me, Brent Mason stands out as my favorite, with Gerald Gallimore and Rocky Johnson coming in as close next in line. My favorite tracks for guitar work are:
Amazing Grace; Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven; and Since I laid My Burden Down.
Also terrific, but maybe not as featured, are: Goodbye World, I'll Fly Away, This Train, and Sunday Soup.
I have to say that to my ears this is a magnificently produced and arranged album, with top notch players all around. A "No Brainer" combination for a great CD.
Again, congratulations, and, as others have said, it was well worth the wait. Thank you.

So, what makes Todd's playing so special for me, aside from the obvious skill, technique and musicality that he demonstrates? Well, if I had to sum it up in one word, which I will, with some hesitation, it would be SWING. This guy knows how to swing, which not everybody does. In fact, he couldn't NOT swing if his life depended on it. It's just there. He's just got it, and, as Duke Ellington famously put it, It Don't Mean A Thing If It Aint Got That Swing.
And I'm not talking about playing jazz, which sensibility our Todd clearly has. He can be playing any genre or style of music, which this album demonstrates, from rock and roll to blues to country to gospel, and it all SWINGS! Now that's what makes it special for me. You either got it or you aint. And for me, the rest is a far second behind.

Hi Todd,

Is it possible to buy digital version? I'm not a big fan of CDs, and it will be additional time+money to ship it to NL.
