Careful with that Corian. I dropped mine on a carpeted floor and it broke like a potato chip. Having a history with Corian countertops, I should have seen that coming. It happened to break in a location that suited well for using the reed plates as glue clamps so it is now a working harp, but I don't get that warm & fuzzy custom comb feeling I get from one of Tom's aluminum combs.

This is the 1st time I've ever mentioned that, and Tom would have probably sent me another one, but it was my own clumsiness. Come to think of it, I drop a harp fairly often. I better stick to wood & metal.

Steve. I watched your videos. I think they are cool. They're just you being you. Thanks for the kind words.

How would these new combs fit with a Turbolid? Tom, did you say something in another thread about them being just a smidge longer than a standard comb? (I bring it up in this thread, because I seem to recall Steve has some Turbolids, so if you haven't got a chance to play with one, maybe he could try to slap one on?)

As for cruel dudes, I'm thinking about getting a piece of wood and carving it to look like a chord harmonica. I'll whack the troublemakers over their head if you need. :)

I have a few of the BMH Corian combs, as well as some of the regular acrylic (not the "fancy acrylic" and two of the aluminum ones. Overall, I've been really happy with the combs, but I do prefer the "mouth feel" of the Corian above the rest, by a lot.

Next in order of preference is an aluminum comb that is anodized blue. I have another, natural-colored aluminum comb, but it tastes weird and the blue one doesn't. So if you are getting more aluminum combs, I'd recommend the colored ones as opposed to the silver-looking one.

I have dropped some of my Corian-combed harmonicas and haven't broken any yet, just had some chipping at the edge where it hit the pavement. Or if there has been any cracking, I haven't noticed any difference in how the harmonica played afterwards.

I'm interested in the new SP20 combs, but I much prefer to make a sandwich-style harmonica out of the SP20 using a "standard" BMH or (now-defunct) Hetrick Corian comb. I push the reedplates, comb, and coverplates against a table when assembling the harp so that everything is exactly flush. No reedplates stick out like on a MB or MS harp; it feels more like a CX-12 in the mouth because nothing protrudes.

Then I round the corners on the harmonica, with it all assembled, on a grinder, using painter's blue tape to cover the harp and not get the grinding dust in it. I round the far end of the harmonica much more than the mouthpiece end.

I also have some Croosovers with BMH Corian combs and with Arzajac's combs installed and I like those harps much better than with the standard Bamboo combs.

Cliffy, I've got a harp like that. It really is nice to hold. From the standpoint of mass production it's a tough egg to crack though. For a comb, you just machine a bunch of parts. The hard work of getting the CNC code down, once you have it just right, you've got the firing solution as it were. When you are talking about having to grind the reedplates you are talking about a lot more steps. I play around in my head sometimes trying to think just how you would do that. (I know one little trick that helps a bit, but it's someone else's trick and not mine to share and only part of the solution anyway.)

Nate: I've never owned a Turbolid nor did I design the Special 20 comb with it in mind. But I am inclined to think that if it fits on a stock SP20 comb it will fit on mine. The BMH comb is 20/1000ths thicker (not much) around the edge of the comb which gives me a little more material to work with. It allows me to put a radiused edge on the comb and make the mouthpiece more contoured and the edges a little softer.
