I was just listening to some recordings under Champion Jack Dupree's name and some of these cuts really caught my ear as I heard the harmonica accompaniment. I didn't know these songs but it was clear the harp player had serious skill. Beautiful round soft tone and great vibrato...then Sharp Harp came on...of course it's George Smith. These are really wonderful recordings. Champion Jack is about my favourite blues performer of all time, and I think George Smith may be top of my list for harp players. I can't think of a single recording at the moment where I've found his playing to be annoying. I'm not sure if I can truthfully say that about anyone else. Btw champion Jack's 1958 album Blues from the Gutter (not featuring any harmonica iirc) is maybe the greatest blues recording of all time. It's definitely a desert island disc for me. A lot of stuff gets on my nerves at times but I always find this amusing and soothing. It always lifts my mood. CJD visited my island about 25 years ago, when I was still very impressionable...he made an impression on me...I saw Robert Lockwood, Brownie McGhee and Champion Jack in local venues within the space of two years, but champion Jack is the one who left a lasting impression. Put your hand on your hip and let your backbone slip...

Thanks Bob. These recordings were "overhead, me and my mule, so sorry so sorry, and sharp harp" on disc 2 of the AvidRoots release 'two classic albums plus 40s and 50s singles'. I believe they were originally on King and recorded in Cincinnati in 1955. There's also half a dozen cuts recorded in 53 with sonny terry according to the notes, though I don't recall hearing any harp on the first time through. On second listen, yes ok on highway blues, number nine blues, there's a harp and sounds like ST..of these red Robin only two of the cuts have a harp, I'd say stick McGhee is on most of them though Thanks for the tip on papa lightfoot, I've found a couple of those now...
