Komuso, that made me laugh!

Shakira plays a bit of harmonica. She seems to focus on first position chordal stuff. I always thought he kind of looked like beef jerky, but I guess Mick Jagger has been credited with having sex apeal.

Komuso: You're assuming that I started this thread for the reason that I stated up front. Actually, I was curious to see whether members of this forum could actually remain positive, and contribute positively, rather than saying things like "I wish you'd used another video."

It was just a test. I was curious. I learned a lot. I learned that even when the OP very clearly asks people to describe their own best or ideal or dream visions of a harmonica video, some people find it impossible to do that, insisting instead on critiquing what other people have put forward.

Interesting. Still, I remain hopeful.

relative to the first post, adam, you are narrowing things down here.. you did not ask for the dream video or specify a limit on time.

if you wanted a dream video, why not ask for that specifically? I took the question in a larger sense i guess...

so to clarify, the original post is what is your dream harmonica video that goes viral?

I fail tests all the time. Doesn't bother me (edit: as long as I learn from it);-)
Occasionally I pass one too!

I wasn't actually going to contribute anything (subject doesn't really interest me as my own output is eclectic at best) till I read the article recently, and thought you at least as an academic researcher *might* be interested as it related to research methods (despite your plea otherwise to ignore it).

But now you mention it there was a discordant vibe to the original post that felt more than a little strange...and a little provocative, especially if the intent was really about a generating a dream viral harp video.

My bad!

Ok since we're encouraged to dream, here goes my dream viral video. It's even got a name, "The Ghost Band". It goes a little something like this:
Picture an old western ghost town, and an old, very dusty, smokey dark bar. The windows and doors are sealed with boards nailed to the house. There's streams of light beaming sipping through some holes and cracks around the house. You see a very dusty old guitar with cracks leaning against a chair on a small stage. An old, maybe blind, man aaproaches and picks up the guitar, sits on the chair, and starts to softly, slowly, pick on the strings. Maybe tuning the guitar a little.
Then you see a little boy outside the bar. He walks around and hears the light tones coming from inside. He peeks through an opening at a window and he only sees the guitar floating in the air! Dust flows from each string as it is picked. An old eerie beatiful delta blues song begins to be played. From inside we see an old man picking up a harp and joining the guitar player. He begins to slowly draw a note. He bends the note and throws on an incredibly expressive vibrato. We go back to the boys perspective, and what we see is a harp floating in mid air. Now here comes the cool thing about the video that made it go viral, apart from the incredibly beautiful music - as the harp player playes the harp, from the outside we only see a floating harp and we clearly see the air movement that is created. Dusty, very smokey airflows that clearly show the airmovement for every note, every bend, draw, blow, split, vibrato and so on that is created. It's so clearly shown that people watching really "get" how the instrument is played. (I mean a friend of mine thought you can only blow through a harp). And the illustration is done illustrative and incredibly realistic. The harp player starts minimalistic and gets more and more advanced, and the viewer can clearly follow what is happening and how the tones are being created. And it's all creating the most incredible blues song. The song ends. Then you see the boy hearing his parents call for him, he goes to them, they say something like we have to get going, they stop by a gift shop and the boy gets a harp of course...

Komusu, it was worth it because I REALLY wanted that article. Thanks -to be used often in the future.
SEX LOOK HERE does actually make your point -it's a focal point of most of the examples posted.

SEX LOOK HERE:
...maybe a video that highlights the ancillary benefits of harp technique could go viral and REALLY elevate the instruments popularity (and, more importantly, ours).
Seriously, women at the table looking at each other, smiling, raising eyebrows, laughing, flushed, waving hands to cool themselves off, ordering another drink, shuffling in the seat during "fancy solos", harp player leaves with the hot chick, harp sticking out of his pocket...

Wow...

I sure misread the original post. I thought it was about about blues harp capturing the attention of America. I thought the posted viral video was an example, not that you were seeking suggestions for a harmonica video that would get lots of hits.

I guess I am too old school to perceive a video with a lot of hits being the same as capturing the attention of America. My developmental years were before the internet and web. To me the internet is a tool that is useful for communication and information, but it is just media and what happens on it is not the same as what happens in my life.

Many YouTube videos are contrived and edited. They are like advertisements on television. I like them much less than uncut unscripted videos of actual events and performances. Viral videos are often like America's Funniest Videos, a show I did not like at all because most the videos were staged, or were just examples of foolishness or carelessness. I hate the Jackass movie concept.

I dabble on the edges of internet media for my own purposes, mainly seeking information and exchanging views, mainly about harmonica. I have not immersed myself in internet social media other than for seeking information.

The internet is not my primary way to view the world and to determine the importance of things. It is too self reflective, a media prone to building a false sense of importance by referencing itself endlessly. Like two mirrors facing each other that reflect little beyond themselves.

I guess your test may be a measure of internet immersion. I see viral videos as superficial transitory phenomena. Life is too short to dwell on them.

I like my music live and in person. I don't care if it goes viral. I want it real, in the NOW. There is great music all over the world. It is nice to see a video of a good performance, but it is not the same as being there.

I would rather attend a sincere mid-range talent musical performance live, than watch a video of an outstanding performance or listen to a recording. If I want to enjoy music, architecture, gardens,or scenery I like to see it in person, not on a screen. I want the full sensory experience. I may inform myself online, but that is information, not life experience.

I guess I may come off as contentious with regard to the OP. I really just don't relate to viral videos as important in my life. This is true to the extent that even after reading the OP repeatedly I misunderstood it until later responses finally made me doubt my initial readings.

I enjoy harmonica forums for the exchange of ideas, but I would rather get together with a bunch of musicians in person whenever possible. If I had correctly understood the OP, I would not have made my initial reply.

So Doug, since you're here, the web is also a viable venue, yes? The OP was looking for a viral idea. At least that's the way I read it. The thread I saw in all of the posted examples was "provocativity", or some measure of Komusu's sex look here.
What would people watch +2 times and/or share with others? I may just work up the idea I posted above. Provocative, yes.

I do participate in the forum for information and exchange of ideas about harmonica. I do like hearing and seeing performances of music online, so it is a viable venue.

I am OK with the OP question being asked, and OK with people trying to think up provocative videos that might go viral.

I just misunderstood the OP. I would not have posted my first response if I had understood it. This is not because it is wrong to explore the idea. The idea of a viral video having significance is just not in my usual way of viewing things.

Now I will move on from this thread...

Too funny! Once again the minions are made to feel like specimens. Does it matter? Nah.

When music is not in my life I skate on thin ice. I've always measured authority as a line to cross. I miss Frank a lot. Not only his music, but his warped sense. I was a class clown only because nobody else had the guts to fill the vacancy. Now, here, there is that vacuum. I yield to the higher power but I'm free to imagine.

California has just voted to give non-violent infractions a pass. Can this site show as much compassion?

Yeah Nate, that's the way to go! Double the exposure! If we throw Bruce Willis in the mix we would become millionaires in the process!
