A slightly odd one- I’ve been asked to play in a stones covers band in a couple of days time. Ok- pretty basic stuff but due to being on the road with my day job I’m not going to be able to check the tracks in advance of the gig. Apparently all songs are in the original key (though I’m not going to be able to check what that key is today or tomorrow)… can anyone tell me the correct harps/keys for playing-
Under My Thumb
Route 66
Like A Rolling Stone
Miss You - lots of sax
Not Fade Away
Midnight Rambler
Gimme Shelter
Little Red Rooster

Thanks..

Some of this is from memory

Rolling Stone - F harp 2nd
Miss You - D harp 2nd (minor key so watch the 3 draw)
Not fade away - D harp 2nd (you tend to play on the IV, song in E)
Midnight Rambler - B harp 2nd
Gimme Shelter - F# harp 2nd
Red Rooster - G harp I think, 2nd

Yes, Not Fade Away switches back and forth between a D harp and A harp. I often play it live - it can be a fun song.

The only other song on your list I play is Midnight Rambler. Its in key of B, played crossharp with an E-harp, with everything happening down in the first 4 holes.

yes - agree it's an E harp on Rambler, that's what I meant to write

For Fade Away, of course you can pretty much play what Brian does on the A harp, on just a D - just honk on the 1 blow / 1 draw.

there are plenty others good tracks with some harp, like Sweet Virginia (A harp, 1st), Shake Your Hips (D 2nd)

I've played harp to Honky Tonk Woman (C 2nd), Tumblin Dice (E 2nd), Ventilator Blues (C 2nd) as well, probably a few others I've forgotten

Indeed... Exile On Main Street is a wonderful playground for harp. My band is gradually working its way through it.

My bandleader is a Stones fanatic, so as a result, the band we cover the most extensive repertoire of is the Stones.

- Stop Breaking Down (D harp 2nd pos)
- Dead Flowers (D harp 1st pos)
- Little Red Rooster (D harp 2nd pos)
- Wild Horses (G harp 2nd pos)
- Honky Tonk Women (C harp 2nd pos)
- Can't Always Get What You Want (C harp 1st pos, switch to F harp 2nd for solo)
- Miss You (D harp 2nd pos)
- Gimme Shelter (Db harp 1st pos to begin, then F# harp 2nd to finish out)
- Not Fade Away (I usually start in 1st pos on my E harp for more melodic tones, then go to cross on my A harp for solos)

A few clips...
