About 10 years ago, I bean going to harp functions like SPAH and the Buckeye.
I didn't have many harps and would keep them in my camera bag. Two or 3 in a couple of pockets. Never had to spend too much time finding the right key.
But there were guys that, it seemed, had no knowledge of the word "organized".
I saw a few guys that kept their harps, sometimes not even in their cases, in plastic grocery bags.
A couple of guys seemed to go a step beyond that and kept their harps in a box. One had a shoe box and another used a FedEx box that was heavily taped.
Were those the good ol' days, a fad or the economic models?
Did today's harp cases come about because the bag broke?

Other than harps, a little digital clock and some lyrics.
I use the old Harmonica Masterclass case and it is right next to me so it makes it easy to cheat with lyrics.

case#1: harps only (in that tray that fits on a mike stand with 2-prong adapter).

case#2 (old hard-sided small luggage piece that I think was for women's makeup) what I will need for current gig:
vocal mike, HiZ mike, mike for amp;
cables;
AFB+ (just in case);
a few extra harps;
pen.

case#3 shoulder bag type thing:
extension cord;
bookend for holding my MA17 head securely on top of my tilted 1x12 cab;
"swirlly gig" -- for a drink on the mike stand;
also, all the "in case something goes wrong" stuff:
More cables, microphones, adapters;
a small "Harp Commander;"
low to HiZ transformer;
DI Box;
sometimes fuse and tubes;
small flashlight.

Jeez, I must really be avoiding work this morning!

Set of SP 20s plus back ups of keys G (3), A, Bb, C (2), D (2), a Low G and a few odd key harps just in case. Plus a bulletized SM57, 1 10' & 1 20' cable, a hao.r made bullet with attached 25' cable. 1 15' guitar cable, 2 impedance matching transformers, a tool kit for the harps, key chart and chap stick. I keep a play list down loaded on my phone and a printed copy in the bag. Oh, 2 chroms. One in A and one in C. I thinks that's pretty much it.

16 diatonics, 3 chromatics. 1 364. Repair kit. Flashlight. Biz cards. Sharpie to autograph cds.
All my sound gear is another case. 2 mics, a m43u dynamic and a 585s, Lone Wolf Delay, power supply, cables, but I also pack sound for the duo as well- vocal mics, cables, music stand, songbooks, cds, and expanding out to amps and a Fender Passport 150 p.a., mic stands, and of course Jolene's guitars. Plus 2 custom painted folding chairs. Sometimes a small stool to set my harp case on.

Tonight we're planning to do a break set for a guy and this will mean the Regal parlor guitar, 2 Champs, and my harp case. P.a. will already be in place. A few pages of lyrics. Traveling light.

This deal we're going to, someone plays every week and the next week's act will come in and do a few songs in the middle, to give the current artist a break and also give a preview of the next week's act.

I have been known to have 6 or 7 harps in a velvet pouch, all the way up to 20 something harps and all that stuff, just to go sit in. These days I travel as light as possible.

I started with pockets full. I'd have to bend the covers back in shape but it was easy. Shirt pocket harps were never a problem but the back pocket ones always needed a healthy tweak. No respect, I tell ya!

EDIT: I always tossed the blue plastic cases and then the cardboard MB cases when I switched. I had cigarette packs that were more sturdy and lasted longer.

Well, I guess I'm pretty well equipped judging from the stuff you folks listed. I do have a carved bamboo chopstick for tweeking reed gaps on the fly. Also carry a Y cable, one female, two males instead of jumping channels. Pen and pad, old school! Also rigged up a long gooseneck with a spring clamp for the amp mic. Clamp goes on amp handle. I carry preamp tubes and fuses. Got a couple of Echo harps in there too.

Yes, I started with a ziplock bag also. That well worn bag would get a lot of long stares.............LOL

I think the harp case has gotten me more stage time then any line of BS I ever layed out. Definitely a good thing to have if you are trying to get established in the local music community. Thanks Folks...BN

i started with a flour sack. used that for maybe a year, my pedals have a bit of paint missing as a result.
one night i went on stage just after midnight and my flour sack disappeared. i think someone was helping clear the stage from the previous act and thought it was left over...i had one harp in my pocket...we put a call out over the PA for the return of the bag...next time i looked it was back where i'd left it. i never was quite sure whether it had been there all along and i'd just not been able to see it...but that was when i decided i needed a case. i fitted out a discarded briefcase for $20 materials and a few hours labour.
i have one of those crown royal bags, but i use it to keep a mic in, inside my case

1. Custom harmonica belt for 12 seydel harps + 4 additional seydel single soft cases with more seydel diatonics + 1 additional seydel case with saxony chromatic (all on the spare place of the same belt). This is harmonicas I plan to use during gig plus spares for most of them. I always get it for gigs, rehearsals, studio work, jams, even jams at home with friends.

2. One more soft case with saxony chromatic on my regular belt always with me

3. One more diatonic harmonica always in my jeans pocket

4. Bag with passport, driver's documents, ipad, repair kit in a harmonica box AND 6 diatonic harmonicas. Always with me.

5. Seydel softcase for 14 harps (it can hold up to 18 and sometimes I use it), mostly for spare harps and very odd keys like Db or LEb. Always for gigs and studio.

6. If I have more than one gig on tour and it's possible to get sharp tool (going by car or by train or air baggage is allowed) I get set of spare reeds and reed replacement tools.

7. Pedalboard:
Last year I fly a lot, so I had to reduce my pedalboard to
- Electrovoice N/D 967 mic
- Audix T50k impedance transformer
- spare chinese transformer
- Boss HR-2 Harmonist pitch shifter
- MXR Carbon Copy analog delay
- LoneWolf HarpBreak or/and LoneWolf HarpAttack depending on weight and gig
- Boss LS-2 Line Selector
- Line6 POD HD desktop in the LS-2 loop with power supply
- spare power supply for Line6
- spare power cables for daisy chaining pedals if anything goes wrong.
- Schisophrenic pedal power
- mic cable
- spare mic cable
- guitar cable
- sometimes DI-box
- pedal patch cables + 2 spares
- Audix Fireball V (in the case when local vocal mic sucks) with mic holder
- Zoom H2 plus accessories to record every gig
- black shoe sponge
- hair brush
- often I play the same pants and shirt onstage, but usually I have the spare pants and shirt to go onstage (for the case I find some dirt)
- Korg kaossilator (only if I gig with Mikhail Bashakov)

7. Yerasov GTA15 amp (http://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/yerasov-gta15j-599203/) + spare tubes and fuses
Only when I drive to gig

8. if I have a lot gigs near and I drive there I repack my pedals to big pedalboard (similiar to pedaltrain) which also includes
- Rocktron Hush noise gate
- Boss RC-30 looper
- MXR 6-band EQ
- BBE Sonic Stomp
- spare guitar cable
- sometimes Zoom R16 and more cables if I want to record my gig multichannel

With one band I play it's strict condition to fly: "no baggage, only cabin carryon". And I have pedalboard case which fits size of carry on (ok, almost fits, but it never was restricted) and weight about 10 kg (never weight was checked, BTW). So I have my harpbelt on me, ipad bag and pedalboard with clothes and spare harp case inside. And I flight without baggage!

In addition to 24 diatonics of various tunings, I carry a Bass harp, some octave harps, and chordomonica. For "other" stuff, I've got my EV Hi-Z stick mic, my "stealth" mic (rebuilt from a dynamic lavalier mic), a Meinl foot tambourine, and egg shaker, my harp fixin' kit (screwdrivers, plinker, reed profiling tools, reed wrench, files, shims, microfiber cloth, parts tray), a jaw harp, and often times extra guitar slides and a capo. I use one of those Fender briefcase syle cases, but I made a custom insert for all my diatonics.
