I'm scheduled to play at David Barrett's "School of the Blues Student Concert", tomorrow night. It'll be my first time playing at one of these concerts, and they only happen twice a year. I was actually asked personally by David, prior to becoming his private student, which was quite an honor for me.

About a week ago, I came down with a pretty bad cold. It's definitely on the upside now, but I worry about contaminating the shared bullet mic that all the harp players will be using. Personally, it's only one song, and I can definitely get through it, despite any sniffles or congestion I have.

Here are my choices:
1) Back out of the show. I would definitely regret this, as I have been looking forward to it for months.
2) See if Dave will let me swap out my bullet mic. I don't want to risk messing up the sound mix that Dave sets up for the show, though.
3) Just play and do a great job. The cold is a week old, and is theoretically past the "contamination/ spread" stage, right?

Just play. You probably won't contaminate anything and - it's only a cold....

I would be disappointed if you skipped....

I can't imagine the mic swap being a problem. Ask David.

You can always wipe the mic with a clorox wipe after you've used it. Go for it - and have fun!

No, it's not a green bullet. It's probably a JT-30 or maybe one Greg sweet custom jobs.

no it will be a green bullet.
it may be dressed up like a jt 30
it is after all, almost halloween.
it will most likely be wearing a disguise.

they will take the Ferrari element out,
and sell it on the black market for thousands of dollars
and drop a 350 chevy motor in its place.

check the vin # with the DMV it will say "salvaged"

Dave told me that I can bring my own mic and swap it out. I'm thrilled to be able to play!

The one positive thing that comes out of playing with a cold, especially a heavy cold is that it forces you to play with much less breath force and if you pay attention, you'll quickly find yourself wasting fewer notes and your tone will often times improve and you may not be as out of breath as often as you may think and this comes from personal experience.

Just play, but avoid ANY alcohol or tobacco products of any kind as well as soft drinks. Water with lemon and NO sugar will help you get thru it. alcohol will dry out out too much.

It went well. I'm glad I played. Video from an iPad, and it didn't capture the sound as well as hoped.

Good job Marc. Like your 3 draw bend dips. Maybe I'll get a chance some time to get out to the bay area to see you guys. Well it's back to LOA5 work for us.

Hey, thanks, man. When I perform, I see only my mistakes and it never matches up to the performance in my head. But, when I look at the video, it's not bad. And if I didn't know the song, I might think there weren't mistakes.

Since I'm familiar with Gary's Blues from LOA4, I did pick out the mistakes. But heck we all make them. The cool thing is if you can play through them, improvise if needed until you find your place. Don't do the "deer in the headlights" thing. The audience usually can't tell if you made something up as long as you're keeping the groove. Looks like you took care of business doing just that. Hope you're feeling better.
