I bought LO to HI Z transformer from Harp-aholic on Ebay and used it together with elements from different vocal mics.

Put together they will become great harp mics!!

Wow! Thanks for the demo and plug Håkan! My eBay user name is Harp-Aholic and the store is HarpCentral, as is the website www.HarpCentral.com home of www.HarpMicGaskets.com , www.CustomHarpCases.com and www.BluesHarpMics.com

As seen on the video, I sell the transformer for $14.99 and I got started using them to transform a low impedance Shure Controlled Magnetic 99C86 to high impedance. I am pleased to see that Håkan has found a new use.

That's awesome Hawk! I come across karaoke mics all over the place for dirt cheap...best one I found to date is the Emerson M189. I'm gonna start picking them up again soon and fit em with transformers.

FWIW, Rockin Ron sells a very bargain priced vocal mic for about $20. Looks like a good candidate!

Thanks! Yes Rockin Ron's mic looks ok for that price. My advice is to remove the ball grill to get closer to the element to get a more compressed, dirtier sound. Wiht a little controlled carving with a knife I was able to remove material from the element so I could place the element into the mic body.

Here is the link to the transformer on Ebay:

@Hakan Ah,Ha did you get to the bottom of Greg,s secret? We better start buying up Karaoke mics before Greg buys them all for his new mics.I,m only kidding of coarse but will say that the mic sounds pretty damn good.I wonder if it will hold up to the test of time.I myself have experimented with some cheaply made mics that also sounded pretty wicked but as said I,d be curious to hear how long the tone will last out of those cheaper/very cheap elements.Only Our Ears Will Know For Sure BTW that inner tube idea is pretty, pretty neat. For myself, meaning my heritage,I call that" Polish engineering at its finest",no offense whatsoever intended.

Really cool vid there Hawk. Yep, you don't need a $300.00 mic to sound good! My Phat mic was a plastic POS that some guy gave me. Just so happened that my DR was hooked up when I brought the mic home or I may not have tried it. WOW, what a sound. Stuck the element in a Turner shell. Has been working for several yrs. Sounds fantastic in bright amps like a Silvertone T-12. You just never know...BN

Since I had the same settings for the different tests, at least according to my ears, the vocal mics elements were about at the same level as the Black CR. Of course the BCR has other sound characteristics, I love my Black CR. The must fun of it all is to experiment and see how it sounds and that doesn't have to cost a lot of money.

I have experimented with quite a few mics and transformers, and you can get some awesome tones out of cheap bits and pieces. My experience, however, has been that when using them in a loud band situation that many (or most) have a relatively low feedback threshold when compared to a shure CM.
