I typed in weather.com on my desktop and entered my zip code to check the local forecast. Over on the side pops up a photo of a beautiful lady playing a harmonica. I bit and clicked on the pic.

Up pops the video below of good ole JP. Wow!

First....The ONLY harmonica related websites I click on are my favorite Modern Blues Harmonica, good ole Rockin Ron once in a blue moon, and what I watch on youtube a couple times a month. Not once have I been on harp L or whatever you guys call it. I'm sure that didn't pop up for everyone in the U.S. that checked their forecast. Amazing! This must be because of my daily clicks on this forum.

Second....He must be making some $$ to have a website as lucrative as The Weather Channel link his instructions. Makes me wonder what these cats make. I haven't seen JP, Shellist, Gussow, or Gindick in Forbes lately but ya gotta wonder. Hmmmmm..would hiring a professional video team, a pretty lady, and a good director to help with presentation be worth the investment to teach the throat bending technique?! HA!

Harpdude, I guess it's some of that targeted - very targeted - web marketing we read about sometimes. I have been followed around the net by Jerry Portnoy's Sonic Junction ads for a while (on things like a Japanese-English dictionary site) after checking out the site. I finally signed up last week.
I suspect it doesn't cost a great deal if it's on a pay-per-click basis.
Some of these targeted ads miss the mark though. I have had some offering to teach me how to "speak English in 30 days" on Facebook.

I agree with BronzeWailer. A lot of sites employ marketers who look into your cookie jar to target you for ads that will entice you to click. Those clicks represent pennies that add up.

The Facebook algorithm is the worst invasion of privacy imaginable. They look at your cookies and invite your friends by messaging them that you are 'following' certain sites that you barely scanned and certainly had no intention of sharing (i.e. ones with religious or political slant).

EDIT: I challenge anyone to diagram that last sentence.

In your browser utilities, there is a function to clear cookies. I just deleted 700 of them from my Safari. Just be aware that you will lose cookies you might want, like keeping permanantly logged into sites, so a minor inconvenience, but well worth doing periodically.

Yes, this type of "marketing" is not expensive for small businesses like JP. It can't be expensive because it has a very low hit rate.

If you want an Orwellian glimpse into where this is all headed: read The Circle, by Dave Eggers. Frightening.

I use Adblock. That way I don't get any ads at all. I also don't get pop ups and all that other annoying crap. I also always have my browser (Safari) set to private browsing mode. That way I don't have to worry about clearing cookies and caches.

I've been using ABlock for quite a while, recently found out about ghostery and like its contribution too for keeping pages clean - so I'm using them both at the same time...a double wammy :)

Don't forget no script, with this, you get back to the last millenia, where everything was text on a white screen or really messed up sites with nothing working due to bad design.

Ah, nostalgia...

Frank, I wasn't familiar with Ghostery, but thanks to your tip, I've added it onto Firefox with a vengeance. It's fascinating to see which websites are gathering what.

For the record, MBH uses a two-year old version of Google Analytics. As far as I know, that's all we're using--along with Facebook and ReverbNation widgets.

Actually, check that: apparently Macwebsitebuilder has built in Quantcast, since that's NOT something I activated. Block it!

I signed up for AdSense several years ago, but never activated it in a way that would permit ads to run on this website.

Adam, Frank - I also just installed Ghostery. I really like the transparency.

It's a two sided coin. Even though an ad for a harmonica site might actually lead to me spending some cash I do enjoy not seeing so many ads for feminine hygiene products. (I do miss the ads for Victoria's Secrets though...)

Nate: I'll let you in on the secret: It's lingerie.

:)

But to the OP, I feel two ways about ads. 1) I do make about $100 a year from ads on my YouTube vids. 2) I freaking hate pop-ups and invasive ads on "normal" websites.

I suppose my internal dialectic allows for these two opinions to exist side by side because I don't see anything wrong with using ads to generate revenue if you are making useful content available for "free". But where do you draw the line between "useful content" and "ordinary content"? I'm not totally sure, but I do use AdBlock and FlashBlock with a vengeance on sites like FaceBook and my Google search results. And I also truly believe that any webmaster that allows popups on their site should be thrown in a Jordanian prison, and the key should be tossed into the deepest part of the Dead Sea.
