i count a 36 bar intro and outro the solos appear to be 24 bar blues with the soloist each taking two passes. seems they are using chord substitutions. i think i have that right. ----------

How does Larry Carlton even KNOW about jinx, when I've been LC's secret fan all these years and never been acknowledged by the great man? I'm going to whine. That's so unfair.
In diggs's video, the drummer, carrying the groove the way he does, is an excellent example of playing behind the beat.
I'll see you and raise you Joe Pass:

I have to agree with Jinx. That video of Carlton just leaves me cold. To me it's like he's playing all the right notes in all the right places but without any emotional content. A kind of musical painting by numbers if you will. Maybe some of his other stuff is better. I honestly don't know as that's the first time I've heard him.
I prefer my jazz/blues/swing guitar to have a bit of bite to it like this.

@kudz funny you picked Joe Pass. He and Jimmy Bruno were great friends. Jimmy used to be my neighbor.
Ok here's some eggplant pizza for you
This is one the greatest version of "Black Orpheus" or Manha de Carnaval. This one guitar no double tracking.

If you can't hear the changes for yourself, start by seeing if you can hear "The Thrill Is Gone" in the tune.
Both are minor key blues tunes.
"The Thrill Is Gone" changes can be used as a basic outline.
"Blues Force" has additional quick iib5/Vb9 turnarounds and some hip substitute chords, especially during the last 4 bars of the form.
Bob James uses pretty substitute chords and contemporary voicings while retaining a simple and melodic solo voice. His Fender Rhodes work is worth checking out. (James wrote/performed The Theme from "Taxi" - that great ol' comedy tv show). ---------- The Iceman

The solo that Mr. Carlton plays starting at about 3:25 of the video is anything but boring, and hits its stride in the mid 5 minute mark. In that case, Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Riviera Paradise" must bore the crap out of you too. :)

atty1chgo - Well that's the beauty of music isn't it? It's all subjective and down to personal taste. As with all the arts, there is no right or wrong. Personally I find that video of Carlton boring and Stevie Ray's music does absolutely nothing for me. Both just leave me feeling cold. Whereas a player like Tiny Grimes for example ticks all the boxes for me.

There are not too many examples of Jimmy's solo playing. Thia is a rare performance.
