There are some over blows too down there, which would add to the choices...

There is a ridiculous amount of music to be explored on the low end of the harp and not just notes but also the vast array of ways the tones down there can be attacked, manipulated and milked to produce some really cool intricate emotionally subtle lines, riffs and phrasings.

Who are some of your favorite players that use the low end of the harp in masterful ways?

Fascinating :)

Lyrics added for spam sacrifice....

Mary had a little lamb,
his fur was white as snow, yeah
Everywhere the child went,
the lamb was sure to go yeah

He followed her to school one day,
and broke the teacher's rule
And what a time did they have,
that day at school

Tisket, a tasket, a green and yellow basket,
Sent a letter to my baby, on my way I passed it.

All of the greats harnessed the magic of the first octave.

SBW II could really make first position moan using that bottom octave.

Paul DeLay would lean into a wave of vibrato, hitting just the right pitches to get the point across.

Carlos Del Junco really leans into the bottom end when he plays 12th position where the tonic is the 2-draw bent a whole step (an unstable note). This especially sounds full on lower-keyed harps.

...Just a few names, but they all do (did).

I find it frustrating when I hear things like "Third position starts on 4 draw". No! It starts on the 1 Draw (1 blow is actually an important note in the 3rd position scale too...) You can really rock third position on that bottom octave!

Folks obsess over overblows, but it's a lot harder to master the 3 draw bends in my opinion. And it's the same kind of work to set up a harp to optimise the 3 hole as it is to set up the 4,5 and 6 for overblows on today's harps.

I love the sound and feel of the low notes on the low harps. You have to work a bit and amplification can be an issue.
Here's one from our last CD. It was fun to record as it was a first take and the guys had no idea what was coming their way :-)
