I have been thinking about the origins of the harmonica as a chord and melody instrument. Chords on the bottom and melodies in the middle and top end. I did not do any real research but just went with that and my idea of what might have been played in 19th century Germany. I can imagine it might have been something like this just before the musician took cover from a hail of rotten fruit!

I know there are some scholars on this site who have a better idea of how the harp may have been used in its early days. I would appreciate a tips on good books and perhaps recordings on the topic.

Try "A Band in a Waistcoat Pocket' by Ray Grieve. Interesting book and CD resource, especially about the early days of harmonica in Australia. Some unique recordings, using techniques that may have been lost.

Thanks for the book suggestion. I see it is out of print but there are used copies available. I will try some of the local libraries first. Looks like the book is more popular down under than in the states. Not too surpising given the topic.

Yes it is primarily about the Aussie experience with the harp. It was apparently hugely popular in the early days with big bands and prestigious competitions with big prize money. Even if the book doesn't interest you, there are some great historical recordings, especially with harmonica orchestras. Let me know if you can't get a hold, I might be able to get some tracks to you.
