Does anyone else's dog 'sing along'? Are they singing or wailing? This is my dog riffing to Harlem Riff (thanks Adam)

My dog comes into the room unbidden and howls when I play. I think it's a form of pack howling behavior. She doesn't mind the chromatic unless I play chordal stuff.-Greg

I play almost every night while I walk my dogs . I have two Shiba Inus I have been doing that for years. They have never once howled while on our walks. However, if I play in the house, they howl almost immediately. We have hardwood floors and the acoustics are kinda loud so I kinda wonder if it has anything to do with being in an enclosed space. I dunno. I would like to think they are singing along and not screaming out in pain.

My black lab mix also only howls with the harp indoors. My son says the dog is screaming in pain, but then he never misses an opportunity to dis my musical abilities!

I have heard that a dog howls to equalize the sound vibrations of high pitches in their ears. Makes sense that they would do it more often indoors where the vibs are concentrated.Sort of the same reason they will roll their heads from left to right, sort of tuning their ears to the frequency. My cat leaves the room when I open my harp case - lol.

It is interesting that the dogs stay and howl. If they were in pain I would expect they would leave the room, like Slimharps, cat.
If I am playing outside the dog will stay near me so if he is in pain, his loyalty (or pack instinct) is stronger than the pain.

I rescued a Walker Coonhound last November. Maggie howls along when she hears any harp. Live or on the stereo. I did some research, this is the explanation that makes most sense to me and I have had it validated a few times. The harp tones trigger an instinctual response in their brains. The "pack " mentality takes over and as we have seen in the movies...when the hounds run together they make a lot of noise... they are very happy when this happens...a flashback to their roots howling and running with gang. No pain in their ears or any such thing. I have a few harps that Maggie "sings" in tune to.I am looking forward to a recording session with her... fun fun fun.

one of my Dogs used to howl every single time I played. The other two have never bothered.

It was only a pain when i was trying to record :)

My pooch usually happily snoozes on the bed while I practice. The chromatic seems to make her a bit anxious though.

The quartet - "3 Young Pups and Steve" - listen around the 1 and 2 minute marks. :)

Interesting thread. I have a standard poodle that when I'm playing indoors will come and seek me out and will howl along with my playing. I think he likes it. He wags his tail so it can't be hurting him. Like others have said... if I'm outdoors the dog will ignore it. Also, if I'm playing straight notes he'll ignore it as well. The howling starts when I start bending notes. He'll also howl when I'm playing dissonant chords on a diatonic or chromatic. I can even get him to howl when I'm playing dissonant chords on a melodica. I think it has to do with pack mentality and something about the semi tones between notes when bending.

My recent rescue has never howled but he knows a bad note when he hears it. I practice OBs alone in the car.

He adopted this pose when I horribly split octaves on a high note while playing flute. Perfect critic.
