Looking to replace the Sig8 in an HG1 with something else. Wondering if anyone has experience with both the Weber 8a100 and the 8a125 in a low wattage amp? I know the 8a125 in theory can be perceived as louder but what about break up and tone? Would the larger voice coil break up later or be "cleaner"?

I have a pair of 8 A 100 but I don't know if it's a fair comparison, since it's a 2x8 cab...
I have a homemade 5f1 in an hg2 cab with sig 8.
I'm proposing to plug my 2x8 into that amp to compare with sig 8...but there may be too many variables I fear. Fwiw though, I'll give it a go and report back.
Sorry, don't have the 8a125.

I tried my 2x 8A100 cab against the sig8.
I'm not sure if the 2x nature has an impact, or if it's just a lower sensitivity speaker, but I have to turn the amp volume higher with the 8a100 cab.
As far as tone, the sig 8 is smoother, a bit less defined in the bottom. I'd say it breaks up about the same in the top, but doesn't have as much prescence as the 8A100. It is smoother though, through the midrange.
This is all just fwiw of course...my amp is a 5F1, built with Magnetic Components 'classic tone' trannies, with a cathode bypass cap on stage 1 preamp, running 12AY7, and 385 volts on the plate of the power tube. Cab is a HG2, and the sig8 is original from that amp. It's probably done more work than the 2x8 cab

I have an 8A100 smooth cone, 8F125, Sig 8. Tried them all in my '68 Fender Bronco.(VC) The A100 is OK but is not loud, more compressed. The Sig is lifeless IMO. The F125 is my favorite. The larger VC is a little fatter and more efficient. I tend to prefer ceramic mags in small amps. Also prefer cones with just a couple of ribs. You can talk about this till the cows come home. The only way to find what you like is give them a try...BN

Thanks for the input guys. Gives me thoughts to ponder.

The Sig8 that is in the HG1 now is okay but does seem to lack some responsiveness and the tone is kind of what you would expect from a cheap ass speaker, which can have a charm of its own.

A while back I swapped out the CTS in Kalamazoo for a Weber 10A100 and was well pleased with the result. More volume and though it lost a little of the signature Zoo nastiness it was replaced with an element of quality yet still plenty of crunch.

Barclay Nectar, your comment about the F125 is interesting. It has occurred to me that the Ferromax Weber in my Avenger contributes a lot to the party, though I usually prefer alnico for harp amps.

I know it is all a matter of personal taste and trying things out is the best way to determine what one likes but I can't afford to be buying three or four speakers to experiment with and I rarely buy new. Therein is the dilemma. Still, based on the input I'll consider an Ferromax if one comes up at a price.

Thanks again for taking the time.
