My uncle who left me his harps when he died at age 95, Also left for me a Wilcox-Gay Recordio Model 7E4?. I only know they were used to cut albums. This thing is in great shape, which includes Am/FM Radio and Turntable. The antique cabinet is also in good condition. The tube amp is quite large and the 12" Alnico Speaker has a huge block compared to the 6" speakers I have. Can Anyone tell me if its worth keeping as is, or do I take the amp and speaker out to build a new amp? He also left me a many excellent condition old vinyl. Don't know where to start with it yet. He played on the Ohio State University radio station in the 1930s and also played with the late Bradley Kincaid.

If there's a mic in your setup, take a look inside at the element.

Unless it's hiding, the "Mic" is the one thing missing.
The Model # 7E40 shows the Mic on the Wilcox-Gay web site. I had better go back to the house and do some looking !

Larrystick and Wendell; and all who may respond. I just came across the original Recordio Mic. Its in as new condition and in the original box with part # 108-15. Can anyone enlighten me on the mic or the Recordio itself. This complete unit is in excellent condition. Don't know whether to keep it or tear apart for the Alnico Speaker, or if the Mic element is worth putting in my 50s Shure bullet, or what ? All Help Appreciated !!!

KC, if it's like the mic shown in the link, it appears to be an early crystal, made by Brush Development; if it still works you can put it in your shell

There are Recordio collectors out there !

Wendell: I think you are correct. It has a Brush Pat. REissue 20213 stamped on the back. I was hoping it was going to be a white or black CM or CR as James e-mailed me. Doesn't mean this is a bad thing. I have a vintage shure bullet shell that needs an element.

Some harp players would prefer a brush crystal to a CM or CR, notice that Greg H. charges the same for a brush crystal in his microphones as he does for a black label CR. ($219).
(Of course the Brush crystal you found may not be working. Be super-duper careful with it.)

Hallelujah: I sure will be careful with this Mic. I just spoke to an amp repairman who owns a 1935 Recordio. He has enlighten me to the point I might want to keep this thing intact. Especially because I have the vinyl and know personally who did the recordings. This guy is an old tube head from Ohio. The amps he builds are right down my alley. Says he works with a lot of stuff from the 40s and 50s. He is also very reasonable $$$$.

For the record - I just played last night with my Brush Crystal mic. Sorry - the video is on Facebook and I don't know how to post it here other than the FB URL: video on FB

I opened the tune, and got a solo at the 6 min mark. I wanted to use the vocal mic for part of it but the sound guy was catatonic. Low D harp for first part of that solo.

That was Smokin !!! Thanks for vid Greg. If I choose to use the element I will certainly send it off to you. I already sent this brown shell one other time and you were gracious enough to sell me the "nickel chrome bullet" that you had built instead. I get a lot great comments on that mic and still have the brown shell to work with. Anyway, thanks fro all the info.
