I just bought a Jazz Real Book and I'm going to play some of the tunes out of it like anyone else who plays an instrument. Anyone else do this and if so could you reommend some other books?

I've played many tunes from the Real Book on chromatic. When I was starting on chromatic I used some of the Jamey Aeborsold play-alongs for practice.

Here's one that focuses entirely on blues changes.

Yep I've used the realbook w/ diatonic- just like any other lead sheet... There are fake books and lead sheets for pretty much any thing. It all depends on your personal taste. If you want a REAL CHALLENGE try playing out of the Charlie Parker or Coltrane omni book. Hard stuff for harp!
One thing that you will need to prepare for is transposing in your head depending on what key harp you are playing with what song

I look though for songs with minimal accidentals to start. Then ones that have accidentals that can be achieved with standard bends. For example, Steven Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns" in Eb plays nicely on a Bb harp. The Low Ab's can be bent down and all of the Ab's in the middle register are raised to A natural.
