A few weeks back, I was in south Florida visiting family and I went and sat in with a friend's country band. Here's a clip of one of the few rock tunes they cover, ZZ Top's La Grange. Harp solo starts at the 2:00 mark. I would love to hear some constructive criticism. I was recovering from a herniated disc and still hopped up on pain meds, so go easy, guys. ;-)

My constructive criticism would be that "less Is more" Try not to play over the vocals or when the guitar is doing the important fills of that song.

I hear a lot of Charlie M's River Hip Mama in your playing, which is what I do, it just fits.

Under the circumstances, I thought you did real well.

sounds to me like you know what you're doing.

speaking from experience, the only suggestion i have....

keep an F harp handy, just in case they modulate to C
and hand of the solo.... stranger things have happened!

nice job.

I liked the band, would enjoy hearing some of their country stuff.

Nice work. After your solo the guitar player wanted to trade, but then he didn't. I like how you sorted that out on he fly. He played one trade lick, you followed (nicely) but then he went straight to rhythm.

Thanks a lot, guys. Good stuff. Harpaholic made a good point about playing less. I also thought my 3d bends sounded a little sharp at the beginning section. I'm gonna be back in Florida in July and have an open invite to stand in with these guys. Can't wait!

CarlA: The Square Grouper in Jupiter is a great venue! Very laid back beach joint. I grew up in the area and lived in WPB from 1998-2003 before moving to Europe. I'll be visiting family in the area this summer. Can you hip me to some of the good SoFlo blues jams? We'll be staying mostly in the Stuart area (Martin Co.).

hooktool mentioned wanting to hear some of the band's country stuff. I just noticed they have a page on ReverbNation: www.reverbnation.com/andrewcartermorris.

Mondays @ Turn 3

Wednesdays @ Fishtales

Thursdays @ Big Dawgz 2

Thursdays @ Rips sports bar

Saturday @ Rosey Baby's

There are several more but these are the ones off the top of my head. All the info is on the south Florida blues society website.

Bobby Weinberg is the president and runs the jam at big Dawgz on Thursday nights. He is one of the nicest people on the planet and will make every attempt to make sure that EVERY person who wants get an opportunity to jam.

I'll be back at the Square Grouper again Thursday night (July 24) with the same band. If anyone's in the northern Palm Beach County area and digs country music and a fantastic beach-bar setting, drop by! Music is 8-11.

Very nice! I like your speed phrasing, sounds pretty good for the kind of rock you were playing. I love ZZ Top, BTW.

The only thing I must criticize is the way you took the breaks. It sounded like you didn't know they were coming. Play looking up, keeping eye-contact with your bandmates, so you can give yourselves a signal before a cut and/or a break.
