Or not?
I read Mike's excellent effort on this topic and he didn't seem convinced that opening the covers mattered much -especially amped. http://www.modernbluesharmonica.com/board/board_topic/5560960/5332861.htm
I'd appreciate any update on that and anyone else's take. I am intrigued by the 20's. I haven't bought a new one since 1985 but given the praise from many, including Mike's test comparing covers with the XO added in, I just ordered 4 from the ever awesome Rockin Ron's. I love the XO's so we'll see...
Also, IF they are worth opening does anyone have ad-vice as to how?

Littoral, I open mine up by using a small set of pliers. I grasp the part of the cover that hangs down and bend it back in towards the underside of the cover. I do these little bends going all the way down the cover. Once it's bent that far, then I grab a piece of paper to protect the cover plate tops and pinch the metal back down the rest of the way using the pliers. This time it's a squeezing of the pliers that flattens it out.

Ok. Pliers are, for me, impossible to fold and get a decent result. The ball pien hammer and a block of wood option it is.
Thanks.

I've done it both ways. As herp wrench describes as I can do it with a hammer and end of a work bench and not leave a scratch 4 out 5 times. He's not exaggerating either.
It takes me about 30 seconds to do a cover plate.

from harpwrench,

"Ball pien hammer and a block of wood. If you're good with metal it takes 15 seconds and rarely leaves a mark."

That's exactly how I do it. If you hit the leading edge and follow the bend you won't even leave a scratch. aaannd, you can get a nice round bend and not a sharp crease.

Howzit Kevin! long time no hear.
