I've had several people ask me about custom mouthpieces for their older 260 and 270 harps that had the sharp square holes on them. I thought it sounded like a fun project so I took a crack at it. I'm really pleased with this first attempt. I think it's going to take a bit more experimenting but so far I'm really pleased. Just thought I'd share.

You may want to consider making one that will fit the 270 but with a raised mouthpiece along the lines of the way Herings are made, which often makes it easier to bend notes, and if you, you'd probably want to do a 16 hole version that will be compatible with the present day cross tuned setups.

It is quite a bit thicker than the standard mouthpiece and tapered. Every surface on it has a radius to it as well. Pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Yes that looks very nice!
I would buy two 260 mouthpieces as soon as they available!

Sorry for the delay, with the weekend I hadn't been online much.

I'm hoping that it won't take to long to kind of finalize what I want to do on them. I've got some more experiments that I want to do before I add them to the site but hopefully it won't take to long.

Since making the 260 will be the same as making the 270 I figured I would wait and not even make the tooling for it until I had worked out all the kinks on the 270 mouthpiece. The tooling and process is practically identical so what works for one should translate over to the other.

The only concern that I have is that Hohner does make the Deluxe mouthpiece available to people. While I have heard that some of those still have some sharp edges I'm not sure if my custom mouthpiece is really a feasible solution for folks. I highly doubt that when it's all said and done that mine will cost as much as a replacement Deluxe mouthpiece from Hohner though.

One thing I would suggest to do different than the Hohner piece is Make it the size (top to bottom) as the slider holders. The two pieces the slides moves in. They are slightly bigger than the mouthpiece. I would measure one of those pieces and make the base of the mouthpiece that size. That would be a huge improvement!

I pretty much made that one from metal I had around which was narrower than the slide assembly. The downside is I can't get a piece that matches the width, I either have to go oversize and machine it down to the width, or make it from a narrower piece.

Any estimate of what the price would be on these? I've got a vintage Chordomonica II that is essentially the same frame and mouthpiece as 270. I really hate the mouthpiece, and if yours are available for a reasonable price, I'd certainly consider buying one...

I've put the project on hold for the time being. I'm finishing up the last of my comb orders and kind of revamping my shop. Then I'm going to make up some combs to sell from the materials that I have left over.

I also want to see if the corian mouthpiece for the hands free chromatic can be adapted to work since they have rounded holes.

I've started working on some made from Corian. I'll be sending a few out to a couple folks for them to try and get back to me about what they like or don't like.

I'd make two suggestions:

1) Make it so that the mouthpiece eliminates the need for a slide cage, as with the 280 mouthpiece.

2) Make it so that there's a smooth transition from mouthpiece to covers. The present 270 mouthpiece is uncomfortable when you play wide tongue blocked intervals because the covers rise up steeply and get in the way. Look at how Hohner made the 280 mouthpiece to ease the transition, and how this problem was solved on the Meisterklasse, CBH and Discovery (one solution) and on the current Suzuki line (another equally good solution).

The new mouthpieces that I'm waiting on feedback for are virtually identical to the CBH 2016 in their design, which is also what the HFC mouthpiece is like. I think corian and plastics are going to be the way I'm going to go on them as metal just requires so much more work that lead times would get to be an issue at some point. Well depending on how popular they were.

I hate what the CBH 2016 Delrin mouthpiece feels like in my mouth, the shape is fine.

I think the corian mouthpiece has a smoother feel to it. But that could just be my opinion.

Hey Killa,
I bet one of those would look good on your 270!
