That's the title. Wailin' Wood of Nashville, TN. Interesting. I like the repeated fast basic upper-octave lick at 1:46-1:51 or so.

Here's a much slower and very soulful thing--although I'm not a fan of most of what happens after 1:43:

This guys OVERALL performance is pretty stellar IMO. Everytime you think it's not possible, there is someone who exceeds the boundaries.

I don't know, maybe if I wasn't familiar with Charlie McCoy, Buddy Greene, Mickey Rafael, P T Gazell, Madcat, Tobin Wingard, Darrell Mansfield and a few other masterful players I would be more impressed. He was just Ok for me. BTW: I think his wife posted this, the little comments were kind of silly.

From rbeetsme-

I totally agree but would leave out Mansfield. I think Mansfield is completely over-rated but a lot of people like him. It is a mystery to me that Todd Parrott likes Mansfield. Oh well.

I was in a country band 82-83 and would play this kinda stuff all the time. Six sets a night. 9:30pm- 3:30am. I got good at it.

This is very nice, but nothing special. Folks should take more care as to who they are labeling "worLd class".

Geez, compliments of any kind towards other harp players are near non-existent here on good 'ole MBH. You would almost think people are asking for kidneys

" It is a mystery to me that Todd Parrott likes Mansfield. Oh well."

MP, I like a lot of players who many harp players would not consider "masterful" players, usually because there's something to learn from their playing, even if just a couple of things.

Darrell Mansfield was someone I discovered early on in my harp journey, around 1991 I believe, and was the first player I heard play amplified. He was an early influence on me, to a certain extent. And whether or not one likes his harp playing, he or she must agree that he has a great voice. I used to like some of the crazy stuff Darrell did on the lower octave of the harp in the 90's, but have never been crazy about the high register licks, no matter who is playing them - Popper, Sugar Blue, etc. The high licks do sound good sometimes, but are often overused.

This guy does know his stuff. Not many bluegrass harp players around that I know. Bluegrass will teach you speed with discipline or you will go other ways.

@jbone I love bluegrass as much as I love blues, but I don't play bluegrass harmonica like this. I try to play fiddle parts - the fiddle and harp are similar because both can do sustained notes. So, imagine nice long steady "high lonesome" notes coming from the harp. And all in second position - love the chance to use a Natual Minor for bluegrass songs like Nashville Blues by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Good fiddle part in Southern Flavor by Bill Monroe.

Thanks for clearing up the "mystery" for me Todd. Oh, I don't care for his voice either so I can't admit to it being great.
But if he was an influence and you like him that's great. I've been influenced by any player that does something interesting. A lot aren't very good but I like 'em anyway. Must been in a mood. I'll knock it off.

I bought a lot of Charlie McCoy records just for his harp. I listened and practiced to them hour after hour. I was 16 and could block out all the over production Nashville was famous for in those days. ('72) Orange Blossom Special and The Fastest Harp in the South were my "get over" numbers.
Played a lot of CW bars for a couple of years. We actually carried an acoustic piano to a lot of gigs. It was a spinet but still...

I watched a video where you demonstrate a rather long cool Charlie McCoy lick and thought, "yeah, I used to play just like that back during the Urban Cowboy Scare when you couldn't get a gig unless you played country.
Anyway, you understand how to play Blue Grass. So do I. That is why I'm not big on the kudzu video guy. He wastes notes just to have speed over melody. Playing fast is cool if the notes are musical.
