As a trombonist and a harp player I took you literally!

To my ears Dennis was evoking the Bari Sax more that the trombone.Looked like a great show at any rate.

Wandering thought Balboa park I have notices that a Cello gets more attention for a distance than a guitar, but neither are a match for a trumpet.

Where did you get that comic Hawk "The New Yorker" ?

I know Dennis loves the sax, but his solo to my ears has a lot a trombonish stylings in it too :)

Hey I was at that show last friday night, sitting about 5ft to the left of the stage. What a night ... Dennis Gruenling on harp, Doug Demming on guitar, and Kim Wilson showed up and played! Oh ya I was in harmonica heaven!

I was studying St. James Infirmary in preparation for leading it at Slo Jam, when I came across 2 Trombone Shorty versions, the one posted above and one where he uses a trumpet. As I recall he use the same ad lb about trombone playing even though he used a trumpet in the piece. His singing is quite good. It seems that more harmonica players are noted for singing as well as playing than brass players.

Here is my current favorite virtuoso show off piece for trombone as performed by Joseph Alessi, who many trombonists know from the forward and notes he has written to enhance the Arban's Trombone Method book that many of us have studied. Note the range of the steps at about 4:45 into the piece, then at 5:19 the speed gets so fast as to be almost comical. Just like good harmonica players, good trombonist like to show off in ways that are lost to all but other trombonists. In spite of that I find this piece musically enjoyable, but then, I like classical music.

IN the Trombone Shorty piece at abut 1:50 he gets quite a reaction from the crowd with a quick double tongue. This technique can also be used on the harmonica, although probably not quite a spectacularly as it works on a brass instrument.

I'll be backstage with Trombone Shorty this coming Friday evening at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. I suppose I'll have to interrogate him on his embouchure and tongue block techniques.

Buzadero, that sounds great! Wish I could even be in the audience.

The embouchure for trombone and harmonica are different but the tonguing to start and stop the airflow are the same. There is a similarity between using a natural break that occurs on the trombone when the next note is higher but the slide position is further out or visa versa to get a clean break between notes without tonguing to sliding from one hole to the next on a harp to get a similar effect.

That impressive circular breathing that Trombone Shorty uses would also work well on the harp.

From Dennis' Facebook page on Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams
Dennis Gruenling Those CDs are KILLER!! Paul Williams is one of my main influences for jump blues playing, especially when I play those low-tuned harps!

This is funny. My wifey & I went to see Dennis Wed. night and she asked me why his harp sounded like a trombone. I guess all those guys trying to sound like a sax have it all wrong. Shoot for trombone. Come to think of it, there's one right behind me.

It was a killer show.

Depends which sax-Paul was exceptional on the Baritone, which is what Dennis was referring to-then again, people who have not heard Paul would have no idea, and would simply relate Dennis' low keyed playing to a trombone.
