What is the VHT Special Six's bigger equivalent? I have the VHT and love it, but in some situation would like something a bit bigger/louder. In another thread I have seen classic examples, usually second hand, but was wondering if there is a new amp that can be modded.... maybe a 2 x 10? Something VHT quality and equivalent price?
Thanks

Libertad, have you taken a look at the bigger amps in the VHT Special series? The Special 12/20 may interest you. A 1X12 in its combo form, but it also comes in a head that you can run with a 2X10 cabinet. ----------

The special 12/20 is actually based off of the Special 6 Ultra. has all the same tone controls, ultra channel and texture switch, can run 2 speaker extention cabinets which is great.
can also run 4,8 or 16 ohm cabs and has a voltage selection switch, line out and effects loop!
Also, VHT is releasing the Special 44 this year. 44 watt handwired valve amp in either a combo 1x12 or as a head.
Just hope more people cotton on to the other VHT gear - (Classic series are awesome amps too) and stop giving Fender anymore money for releasing crappy amps and charging a buttload of money for them because they got a Fender brand name on it.

@BBR
I think the 12/20RT has gotta be one of the most versatile amps ever built! It's got it all! One thing I'm unsure of though, and I'd like your opinion on it. Seems to me that maybe a more economical route would be to get the base 12/20 model, and also VHT's new Meloverb reverb/tremolo pedal to run through the effects loop. A lot more control over the effects that way, and a lot closer at hand to switch on and off as well. Your thoughts?
And are the Classic series still being sold? I can't seem to find them anywhere... ----------

The 12/20 looks quite interesting. I'd love to hear some clips of harp played through one.

Seems to me like VHT's kinda trying to cover all the blackface Fender bases. Special 6 for Champ, Special 12/20 and 12/20RT for Princeton, Deluxe, and their Reverb counterparts, Special 44 for the Bandmaster/Bassman/Pro range. Hope they keep it up.

The Special Six seems to enjoy a strong reputation among harp players. What about the Special Six Ultra? Does anyone in this forum play through one? I guess the main difference is the 12 inch speaker, and some extra controls. I would be interested in hearing how the Ultra compares to the basic Special Six. Does it have the same magic that makes the Special Six a favorite among harp players?

As far as I can discern, the Ultra is designed to be a more gainy and ballsy rendition of the SP6. I believe it has another 12AX7 in the preamp to boost the gain, and the 12" speaker helps sustain that tone. Also has a boost on it, and if memory serves, it can more readily accept a 6L6 in the power socket. I'd say it's a scaled down version of the Fender Super Champ from the Rivera era. ----------

I tried a stock 12/20 reverb/trem with 6V6 tubes for about 30 min. Seems like it should have everything good for harmonica but I could not get a sound I liked. It is a wonderful medium size amp for guitar. Jim R

Thanks Hawkeye, that makes sense. I'm just wondering if the Ultra gives up anything that makes the SP6 so special for harp (besides the price).
VHT's European distributor, Thomann, has stopped selling the SP6 for some reason... so either I have to hunt down a used one, or buy an Ultra.
Rogonzab- nice jam going there. The Ultra seems to be working for you - anything you dislike about it?

A440,
That is not me, is a friend.
Is a good tone that is for shure, but I havent tried, only hear it as an audience.
What I dont like of that amp (and that is the reason that I didnt buy it)is that is to big and heavy for a 6w amp (37.5 lbs or 17 kg).
Most of the 5w tube amp weight half of the ultra and cost less.

I'm using 2 special 6 combos side by side . You could not ask for more tone or volume. Big Sound
