Here's the clip that convinced me to bring Charlie Sayles to Hill Country Harmonica. If you've seen it, you won't mind watching it again. If you haven't seen it, you need to see it. This is raw, unadorned harp. If you've ever had dreams of getting out on the street, just you, your harp, a mic, and an amp, and making money with it, this could be your road map:

Great control and sweet vibrato
I can hear lots of players mainly big walter and his street playing reminds me of that Nat Riddles recording with all the sirens in.

Definitely a national treasure. Great vibrato, but beyond that, he's got the spirit. The word "raw" seems to have been created for the guy. Some rough edges, but they always contribute to the overall effect. I suspect that some developing players, seeing how easy and "natural" he makes it all seem, assume that they can just pick up a harp and do the same thing. You know: pure expressiveness. But what he does takes a lifetime.

Whenever HCH happens another time, Charlie Sayles will be back.

The first video sounded GREAT! He must be using a top-of-the-line microphone(at least a black label CM element), $2000 amplifier, and definitely a customized, embossed, after-market comb, and special cover plate screws to be getting THAT sound. There is NO OTHER way to accomplish it otherwise.

Ps. I am pretty sure he also had the cover plates opened-up, that's why the projection was so loud!

Charlie was a harmonica teacher early on when I partook at Augusta Heritage Blues Week.

While he was not very good at explaining blues harmonica as a teacher, there was definitely something about him that was very attractive to the students...a "real deal" type of vibe.

Adam and Charlie are a great inspiration to go take your minimal gear and go busk

harp and a hi hat-I so love this.
I must add that I find Charlie's percussion work is so far in advance of the basic stomp I can manage whilst playing harp- but I'll keep at it.

@ Kudzu, thanks for introducing Charlie at HCH. I got a chance to talk to him. I found him to be a very humble, likable, and just a nice guy. I enjoyed the call and response he did with the group. It was great time!

I second that, SB Slim. Got inspired so I went out by myself, yesterday, for the first time in months. Way harder than with a guitarist. Respect to kudzu and Charlie.
