Okay, so I know Google is a great source of links to articles, and I know it has been moving to make it easier to just type in a question and get an answer, but this is new to me.

I typed in a question about a song key and instead of a link to articles it gave me the answer, right there at the top!

How long has this been going on? :)

I have been looking for song keys,probably the last year or so,seems to have showed within the last 6 months.Usually is fairly close to original published key,which is fine,but don't count on when playing out,and with different guitarist's.Nice touch though.

Looking up the basic guitar chords,writing them down,so you can convey them to your band or new people you play with gets everybody in the ball park,at least.

Have to start using the c harp pitch pipe technique Greg said he learned from Barrett.Also start running my own songs.Most of the time I ask assertively right off the get go,maybe a tad amateurish,but usually am given the right key.

A C harp or pitch pipe works well. I keep a electronic chromatic tuner in my pocket and sing the root into it to get the key. It works well and fast but does nothing to help my ear stay sharp. Kind of like using a calculator to figure change, effective but a sign of lack of skill or laziness.

I understand what you're saying but at least you can feel confident of singing the root

You sure it's the RIGHT key? About twelve months ago I decided to have a go at a song which we'd never done but it was awfully topical(our region was surrounded by bushfires, the song was Springsteen's "Fire") and I thought we all would have heard it anyway so I Googled it for the chords. I handed the sheets out to the boys and away we went..but it was a disaster, the bloody chords were just wrong. I wont be doing that again, not without checking anyway.

@slackwater,

I have found it worth it to get chords out of a "Real Book" or get a digital download of a lead sheet from MusicNotes or similar. Much lees chance of wrong chords than taking what someone made available for free.
