Magic Dick on Tongue Blocking & Puckering (Interview Snippet) -By David Barrett...

Here's a portion of my extensive (3.5 hours in total) interview with blues, rock, soul and jazz harmonica player Magic Dick, going up later today in full at BluesHarmonica.com. Most of you are familiar with Magic Dick's famous blues harmonica instrumental "Whammer Jammer," released in 1972. You'll be pleasantly surprised to hear that Magic Dick is still very passionate about the harmonica and shares some great insights into its study, practice, recording and his overall perspective for the performance of music. In this snippet Magic Dick talks about tongue blocking, puckering and the willingness to stick to a practice regimen that will allow you to fully realize a technique's applications. Frank - thanks for this. I like the idea he expresses: that LP and TB can give different sounds and effects, and you can, and should, use either of them when it suits. That does seem to me to be more palatable than the 'always one embouchure' directive. Or the idea that you should strive to make them sound the same, as some goal in itself.

You're very welcome, and may I Thank the Great David Barrett for the interview and the Great Adam Gussow for the forum to share it...I agree, they're equally important when looking at the big picture. Both are highly worthy of Mastery, because of their unique contributions to tonal manipulation and presentation!! :)

Not a good set of words, Frank! My wife just walked past me and thought I'm learning some bizarre tricks from a porn site's forum!

puri: THAT is funny....

Frank: Were you sitting there listening without me knowing, when my instructor was talking about this very interview, while forcing me to work on TB yesterday during our session?! Wow! Great to see this posted. We really did talk about this interview a lot yesterday and it brings it home to see it. I was about to look for it on the computer and here it is. Thanks.

MTG: Right on....

Thanks for reminding me about this interview. I'll need to check out the whole thing on David's site. I started out in LP and initially had no interest in TB. Then last year I got hooked on David's site and decided to go through his LOA program to improve my playing. David really pushes the TB. I was resistant to TB at first, but decided to force myself to learn it. WOW what a difference it has made in my playing. I now frequently switch back and forth between the two embrouchures based on what works and/or to obtain a certain tone. Fun to experiment and strategize on songs/licks. I recommend learning both as it opens up a wider range of techniques and tones in your playing arsenal.

puri - I had to laugh when I read your comment - ah yes. I see I've become immune to all the harp double-entendres. Good to be reminded of the dangers here...

LJS - is your teacher advocating moving to TB, or mixed?
