Another post of mine reminded me of when I played in a band with a tuba player acting as the bass. I really loved that sound. Plus we got a lot of attention with harmonica and tuba. The bandleader used to tell people we have the biggest and smallest instrument!

I looked around on Youtube and didn't see many examples of tubas in blues bands. Mostly you see brass bands and such, but not so much traditional blues.

Can anyone point me to some good tuba playing blues bass?

Doctor Clayton's 'pearl harbour blues' I think has a tuba.
Mic Conway's national junk band has a sousaphone player in the bass role. Very skilled she is too!

While not exactly blues, Leon Redbone used a tuba to good advantage. Seems like I remember Taj Mahal having a couple of tracks w/ tuba also.

Be sure to check out the New York band Hazmat Modine - blues/klezmer/jazz - very cool stuff. AND a tuba for bass.

In the Hazmat clip, it's a Sousaphone used for the bass.

We play a song by Roy Bookbinder "she did you a favor" that is covered very well by The Backsliders. They teamed up with Roy Bookbinder on this one. Has a great tuba part. I played tuba and baratone in highschool band and always appreciate some good bottom end brass.I found their version on Spotify.

Cyclodan,
Thanks for that Taj Mahal video. Loved the tone of that tuba!

Root,
Ya, Sousaphone. But a sousaphone is just a tuba made for marching band. Same sound really. Sounded good.

As posted in another thread, I am in a band with a tuba player from the Navy Band here in San Diego, Nathan Helvey by name, and he is so very musical. Search YouTube for Champions, that's the name of the band.

I adore this band... only ever heard them do one song with harmonica but couldn't find a good version on the tube.

Todd Edmunds, who used to play bass with Jason (and is now with Otis Taylor), is also a tuba player.

Buckweed (Todd Edmunds) comes to my jam at Ziggies occasionally, and I've been after him to bring the tuba. I'll get video if it every happens. That would be awesome.

I recall Robert Lucas doing a version of "Built for Comfort" with a tuba on bass line, can't remember whether it was cut under his own name, or Canned Heat though?

Hopefully this is it, can't play YT at work, so I'll check when I get home...

Check this one: the guy of the bass harmonica and tuba is Jason Ricci's bassist. I'm starting to think he likes low frequencies, wonder why.

Todd's tuba's valves have an interesting percussive effect.

I guess bass is bass and if you can create a good bass line on an electric bass, why not on the bass harp or tuba?

The Tuba player in my Brass quintet is considering learning the electric bass. I encourage it. It might be fun to hear how the quintet music sounds with the electric bass playing the tuba part.

My friend John Doyle is in Tuba Skinny he's the sax player on the left in the picture when the video is frozen. We've done lots of gigs together and he practices every moment he's not on stage.
