Thanks to Ronnie Shellist's recommendation, I have been listening to a lot of William Clarke in the last couple of days. Of course, I had heard of him, but I didn't realize how truly great he was. Plus, he was a very good singer, so good, in fact, that he has bumped Junior Wells out of my top five all-time great singer/harpists.
Here, then, are my personal five favorites:
1. Paul Butterfield 2. Kim Wilson 3. Sonny Boy 2 4. William Clarke 5. Little Walter Jacobs

Good picks. Yeah old Bill was bad ass. I would have to make it top 7 and add Rod Piazza and Mitch Kashmar, maybe Al Wilson in there too.

William Clarke was the real thing. I got to see him in Houston in @1995, not long before he died, and it was one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Great band, great sound, great tunes, and great harp playing.
It's just a real shame. ---------- Call me J

IMHO William Clarke was one helluva force. Take a listen to some of the unreleased stuff I put on YouTube... There's a handful of cuts there... I sure wish I had Video for it!

William Clarke was an incredibly talented man. He had a killer voice, was a good songwriter, had incredible harmonica chops and he played great guitar too. He had a tone so huge it would've turned Walter Hortons head. His music never seems to date and remains as fresh as ever. His passing was a very, very sad day for the blues world.

Saw William when he was touring with that guitar player that was missing fingers...It was in Detroit at Sisko's.
Medium sized blues club, but William's presence made it feel like a very tiny club...big man! ---------- The Iceman
