I'm with on this one Frank. Two different style players, but two high energy, passionate, fun to watch, dynamic players that can bring the house down.
Reserve me a front row seat for this show Frank!
I watch that 2nd video every time I think I'm getting pratty good. Unreal!

That guy could inspire sax-alto players (it's usually told the contrary)...superhuman! Mooncat, were you born on the earth?

Any video of these guys on the same stage grinded the gears? If not, it must be some kind of conspiracy? All these years and nothing, this needs to be investigated :)

At a Jam Camp Gindick style in Atlanta in, around 2005, Ricci, Gruenling and I were teachers.
Jason and Dennis did a little playing together, but I don't believe anyone recorded this event. ---------- The Iceman

At SPAH in Milwaukee in 2007, I sat on a stage at some panel or clinic. The panel consisted of Jason, Dennis, Joe Filisko, me, and one other guy whose name I can't recall--or perhaps two other guys. If there were video of that panel, you might get some duo action.
But yes, Frank: that would be an excellent show, and I encourage Jason and Dennis to make it happen!

That was at the blow off for SPAH, I was there! First time for me. I met a whole bunch of harp players including all these guys. Didn't know Pat was ill at that time. Brings back memories. Reach Mann offered the tapes later on harp-l to raise funds for Pat.

That's how I got the tapes-I donated to the cause, and got to meet Pat here in Florida-he was playing 5 minutes away from my house. We talked about a lot of things-he loved Jason and Dennis' playing-and he was a great player himself. That was the first and last time I would see Pat-Godspeed to him.

That was great, really interesting. Something to see how Ricci went down the road that Ramsey blazed, so they were closer to the same wavelength there, and Gruenling was heading down a different path, so set a real contrast in the trading bit. That side-by side bit might be the clearest demo of how much Ricci really owes to Ramsey.. you can tell from their individual stuff, but it just jumps out so strongly in this context.
love and peace to all on earth!

It's not video, and it's not Dennis, but there's a pretty great (though dated at this point) recording of Jason and Adam on archive.org The "Adam and Jason Boogie" is outstanding.

Just what the doctor ordered, thank you Tom - I got to see Pat and his band in a bar the size of a shoe box- he had two amps in tandem and proceeded to pound the livin shi# out the blues in his own unique way for the next 3 hrs, cool act to see live and up close - he was something else :)

Whoo hoo. Hot stuff.
Pat sounds like a combination of Jason speed plus Dennis' linear ideas/tone, although Pat was around first.

can you explain what you mean by linear, Iceman? I have a tougher time following the logic of Gruenling.. but that is what is appealing. I think I remember Adam saying at some point he had difficulty "decoding" what he does...

To me, linear ideas are actual musical phrases (not long streams of notes) that are established, repeated and then begin an extrapolation of the basic idea (changing a note or two, call/response type development, or permutating the idea so that it still has a recognizable arc but moves into different territory).
The new "young lion" style of playing favors rapid notes that keep moving forward without developing variations on the theme.
Dennis' style grew from his love of swing style saxophone soloing - listen to Stanley Turrentine, especially when he recorded w/Jimmy Smith. ---------- The Iceman

Hi,
Thanks, tmf714. It was great to SEE the interaction and see if my guesses were correct for who was playing each section.
I know others here know more about these recordings than I do, but the entire evening is a great set of recordings that have been a playlist for me for qyiute a while. Better yet? They are available as free and legal downloads here:
https://archive.org/details/jrnb2005-08-16.akg481.flac16
The links go to several file formats. FLAC is high end codec, but if you have iTunes or a player that does not dig those, there is a link to the MP3 / VBR and Ogg versions, too.
Finally, here is poster from the blow off:
https://ia600201.us.archive.org/6/items/jrnb2005-08-16.akg481.flac16/blowout05.jpg?cnt=0
Here is the set list from my meta tag. I understand from some other posts that Joe Filisko's stuff was removed from the archive at (presumably) his request.

@iceman, I see what you mean. To my ear the individual phrases that Gruenling builds on are quite unique, but the way he builds through a song is logical. That is not as well suited to the format of that video...though it does offer good contrast
The Ricci Ramsey licks are lots of notes connecting what seem to me to be usually more straightforward phrases, with those serving as anchors or destinations for structure of the runs...
